Tactical AK's?
What do you guys think about adding plastic to the AK? I for one really like the look, and think a M4 stock could really improve the rifle as far as comfort. I think I'am going to make this my project for the year.......Just wondering about others opinions, or ideas!

Shakleford you have a full auto ak?
I for one have never understood why people continue to make there AK's look like other weapons.
Shakleford
Not mine, just a pic I found on the web.
catfish88
Do what you like man. Some like blondes, some like brunettes, others like redheads and ebear likes llamas.
luckybychoice
more AKs showing up at competitions with plastic furniture,go for it shak
Shakleford
What kind of competitions are you seeing AK's at? A 3 Gun or something like that?
Shakleford
Still wondering about the competitions you're seeing these at? Not sure if you saw this!
luckybychoice
no i didn't see this,I saw one on a 3 gun competition and at some carbine course shoot in Colorado
Shakleford
I've wanted to shoot three gun, but never had a rifle for it........I thought they only allowed ARs!
luckybychoice
ARs, AKs,Mini-14s,and others.... http://www.3gunrules.com/resourcedatabase.php
Shakleford
Sounds like alot of fun.....They do a few a year at my club!
hillbilly77
A friend of mine has two aks with the 6 postion stocks and poly fronts on them and they are ten times more comfortable than they were befroe the mods. The stock makes it to where someone other than a 9 year old can shoot it comfortably, and the poly front doe not seam to get as hot as the original wood did when you layed into her heavy.I plan on upgrading both mine to the same as his.
OneFellSwoop
but while you're in the it, you might want to look into an AKM muzzle break if you don't already have one. My uncle just installed one on his, and it works wonders on the rise.
Shakleford
for the suggestion about the muzzle break........I'am also thinking about a recoil reducing buffer tube!
KS101010
I personally like the way they look and there is nothing wrong with trying to make a gun that is already fun more enjoyable and more practical. Best of luck! Post pics along the way and have a fun ride!
fixxer72
Leave it wood for nostalgic sake. Dress it up with a nice scope that will make it look good. Check mime out to the left in the little box.
Reaper308
I like the original look as well, especially not a fan of the looks of a M4 stock. If you are going to add shit, Midwest Ind makes a decent rail. Do what you want. Its your rifle.
BtheKid1881
You do what you feel you want to do. It is your gun and nobody can talk down on you how you want your gun. I'm a huge AK-47 man and like the original look to them but I also like the accessories you can put on them. Go for it!!
Snake
My 2 cents here is that Plastic on an AK is a nice upgrade but I personaly would rather have it as original. The one pictured above is nice though.
BluedSteelCharisma
i like it coming from a military standpoint, it puts that rifle more in my comfort zone, as far as m4 but stock, optics and lights go. but on the other hand its and AK ......leave it alone. i say buy two a sagia super plastic wonder ,and a plane jane russian mo fo

Get one of the shock absorber buttstocks made in Israel. They have a spring in them that absorbs most of the shock from firing. I can fire 300 rounds in an hour without any trouble with my shoulder (which has been operated on 7 times.) Also, along using a front vertical grip, you can keep it almost perfectly on target on subsequent rounds if you fire it standing up.
You can get one of these stocks from Mako I think. They do have one drawback, however. Though the stock comes with 2 screws for attachment, 1 of them is too short to even screw in. So this shock absorber buttstock is ultimately held on by only 1 screw. It still works quite well though.
Shakleford
I have looked at the Mako Stock.......it is on my possible parts list. You can also get adapters that allow you to use any AR stock!
CharlesW
if so why not replace the short screw ?
CharlesW
I have one of those Hollywood guns.
Everytime I shoot it I reload the shell I just shot.
But if I were going to war, give me an M1 Garand

I have an AK-47 Draco Pistol that I have done a few things to. First I added a UTC Quad Rail then a muzzle brake. The quad rail serves several purposes - first it doesn't get as hot as the wood did when doing some heavy shooting and of course the muzzle brake makes it more stable on follow up shots. Next I added a Beamshot Laser on the bottom side. This serves two purposes - it's something to hold on to if it's not turned on (I can't add a vertical grip or Magpul AFG2 without getting a tax stamp) and when it's zeroed in it helps with first and follow up shots. Since it's classified as a pistol I haven't added a butt stock so I can't say anything about that on this gun. I also have a Saiga-12 and added a collapsing buttstock with a shock absorbing tube and it's awesome. The Saiga doesn't have the same kind of kick as other 12 gauges because of the gas system, but the shock absorbing stock works wonders for follow up shots and on days when I'm putting 100+ rounds through it. If/when I get a tax stamp for the Draco I will be using the same stock. If you're wondering I got it from the Mako Group. All this aside, the first thing that needs to be addressed on any AK is the horrific trigger. Adding either a Tapco G2 or Power Adjustable trigger is absolutely necessary IMHO. It just helps with any type of shot. So, yes, I am an advocate of modifying the AK and updating the things that can/should be done to suit one's taste. Also, I've found that the Hogue overmold grip has added to my shooting satisfaction considerably.
Reaper308
I have a Draco that I've done a bunch of stuff to also. I went into that project knowing I would be screwing it up. http://www.gunslot.com/forum/akrpksks-thread#comment-148510
I just like the original look of AK's and other milsurps better. I figured that I have a few that look traditional, so I could play with a few. Black synthetic stocks don't bug me, its just the M4 collapsable stocks. I agree that a G2 trigger is a must.
HecklerKoch45
I think if you want to add all of that stuff seen in that picture, I would personally just buy an AR. AKs are built for reliability, thats about it really. Can people be accurate with them, sure, but I bet those people are even more accurate with an AR. If you wanted a cross between the two, I would go with something like a PTR-91 rifle, but they have a new one out the PTR32 that is chambered in 7.62x39 and accepts AK mags. Has match barrel and all sorts of good stuff. You can put a retractable stock on it, mmm... I love them rifles looks, I gotta get me one right now, cya!
HKparts.net click on PTR91 rifles.

I have rebuilt numerous AKs from numerous countries, but never once felt the need or desire to use plastic. I like the original look, and that's what it really boils down to: WHAT YOU LIKE. There is nothing wrong with changing the look, as long as operability still exists.
runawaygun762
Remove the buttstock completely to show the world how tough you are. Then wonder why you aren't hitting shit.
runawaygun762
a fan of the AK at all. However, I may end up getting a '74 someday and if I do, I don't see the point in leaving it with the wood furniture if you can do things to it to make it a more effective weapon. I really like the look of the top picture and would probably end up with a dark earth and brown striped version of that gun. The only gun I will buy and leave original is another Garand.
Nitris
Unlike hastheruns, I have owned and own a few AK's and AR's. I do enjoy the AK platform for all intent and purpose, however; I don't care for the "tactcool" look of the AK. I prefer to leave them as they are in there natural state. If you want distance go with the bulgarian 74 or Norinco 84s hastheruns one is the 5.45x39 the other is the 5.56x45.I have both.
runawaygun762
And an AK in its natural state is a tree and a few rocks, dummy. If you don't like optimizing your weapon to make it as effective as possible, that's your business, but I like to put rails on my guns almost as much as I like buggering your dog.
Nitris
No dumbass an AK in it's natural state is a beautiful weapon...........unlike your gay ass. Optimizing your weapon???? Hey stupid it's an AK spray and pray...All you like is getting your ass reamed by ebear. only one I might add a little to is the 84 or 74.
runawaygun762
ebear has yet to ream my ass. He says he's not ready for that kind of commitment, so he just tosses my salad until he finds a crunchy crouton hanging off a butt hair. Yeah, baby. nice mental image, huh? Why are you imagining my ass crack? Fag!!!
runawaygun762
I know some AK guys (most of them) just love having their hand wrapped around a hard piece of wood. No wonder ebear kept his AK even though he couldn't figure out how to make it work
Nitris
lets see but and hand in the same sentence written by hastheruns...............yeah ...........the only hand in your butt is ebears, there again thats what you like.

Some really nice options...
Reaper308
I have to admit, these are very sweet indeed and I would give runaway's reft rut for one. Thanks to clitbo for sharing...

"Travis from Magpul put together this brief description:
-It is a Saiga cut to 12″ and threaded 1/2 28 right in front of the Russian threads and SBRed with a AAC M42000
-The charging system is something I came up with about 2 years ago before all the other ones you see out there. As you can see from the left side the dust cover is not as open. Yes those are ACR charging handles that I cut and welded on to the carrier.
They do reciprocate which it seems some people have a problem with… why I haven’t a clue… its an AK?!
-Extended custom trigger finger Mag release and Safety
-Ace MIAD grip adapter
-CTR with cheek riser.
-Ultimak scout and lower rail (I welded the locking tabs in for a tighter fit.)
-Aimpoint T-1
-I drilled and tapped the Pig nose adaptor for a sling stud for the MS2 Sling.
-As for the Ranger plates I just took PMAG plates and mashed them on and modified the tab to fit. they will stay on even you don’t mod the tab.
Since this is a one of a kind AK we have deemed it the MAG-K"

luckybychoice
i like that AK setup,more ideas,damn
runawaygun762
Butt it's not (cock) a hard piece of (ass) wood to grip like Nitris (Big 'ole faggot) prefers.
badgirlj36
When it comes to a AK. Now that is a sweet toy. I we go for the Original wood. But that's just me.
browningboy96
I love a good old wood stock AK but to each his own,Also a vertical grip on an AK47 is almost completely useless. Because i feel that holding the magazine offers me more control and stability over my AK. So in my opinion the vertical grip is just for looks.
runawaygun762
Try putting the grip futher out, toward the muzzle. Having the support arm extended more allows more of the back muscles to be used to pull the weapon into the shoulder, compared to using almost all bicep when using the mag or mag well. It allows you to keep the weapon mounted longer (down, ebear. Not that kind of mounted, you fag.) without fatigue.
dentalninja
I'm a huge AK fan. I doesn't matter if the stock & forearm is light wood, dark wood, plastic...
That said, adding plastic usually comes with rails. Picatinny rails open up many options for this great weapon. As runawaygun762 stated above, vertical grips are nice, as are rail-mounted lights, red-dots, etc. Most are tough to do with original wood stocks.
ronin1604
I just stripped to wood furniture of my AK, and replaced with synthetic. I use it primarily for a ranch gun, and to be honest, I LOVE it. Less weight, more compact getting in and out of jeep, or shooting from inside, and less percieved recoil.I am more performance oriented then asthetically driven. Say what you want, I'm sticking with synthetic.
AKAI
Just rember after you run 200=300 rounds through it the plastic or composite will stick to glue like your hands, and it burns, now some like hard hot wood!
Reaper308
yes they do akai... yes they do
Saint J.M. Browning
LMAO!
ronin1604
I can tell you that if you don't have a full auto AK, you won't generate enough heat to affect synthetic furniture. I ran 200 rounds of Tula ammo through mine as fast as i could with no issue.
AKAI
Yea, i just had to through that in, I have composite on mine too! but have seen the results and the crapco dosen't stand up under that kind of abuse. LAMO read all the joke's on Texas! just enough to keep the thread going LAMO! I'm thinking I like the wood(not sure about the hard and hot smoking!) and is being refinished now. On the Posilh underfolder I'm working on I'll post pix soon with Mi Forend, and then maybe replace with the hot wood. No offence to anyone this is just my ony way of having some fun! Just like others in or on this forum any other thoughts? And nothing saying you can't add a rail mount to the wood? might have to try that, anyone seen it done?
Reaper308
never seen it done, and don't care to... but if you want to rail wood, it can be done. nitris is pretty experienced with railing hard wood
luckybychoice
works miracles
AKAI
I'll put the bailing wire under the duct tape and paint over it so it look's really good!
Ishootdaily
Get you a three pack of the Poly Sig Sauer Rails and screw em on. hehe
Also, Liquid Nail will hold anything. HA, just ask Lucky

I have pretty much everything in that package except the buffer tube and the MOE stock. I went with an ace stock on a storm werkz folder
