Texas governor says secession possible
Posted: 09:03 AM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

CNN) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn't ruling out the possibility his state may one day secede from the nation.

Speaking to an energetic and angry tea party crowd in Austin Wednesday evening, the Lone Star State governor suggested secession may happen in the future should the federal government not change its fiscal polices.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry told the rally, according to the Associated Press. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot." (Video below: Tea party fires up debate)

Perry, who is beginning to gear up for what could be a challenging re-election race, rejected more than $500 million in federal stimulus funds earlier this year and has been highly critical of President Obama's stimulus package. (Related: Joe "The Plumber" speaks at Michigan tea party)

His comments come a week after endorsing a resolution in the Texas state House reasserting state sovereignty over federal mandates.

Specifically it states that "all compulsory federal legislation that directs states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalties or sanctions or that requires states to pass legislation or lose federal funding be prohibited or repealed."

Texas, America's second biggest state in area and population, was its own nation for 10 years before joining the United States in 1845.

Should Texas one day secede, one man may already be vying to be its president. Actor Chuck Norris said last month he may be interested in the post.

“I may run for president of Texas,” Norris wrote in a column posted at WorldNetDaily. “That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state.”

Manny,
You are using yellow journalism to promote your agenda. This makes you the same as the people stated you despise. The Governor did not say he wanted to secede, he merely hinted that it could be possible. There is a huge difference. And just something to think about, why would this be a good thing? As soon as one state secedes, it is the end of the United States of America. The enemy wins. This is a horrible thing to do. The short term looks good, but the long term is the worst thing for freedom. If you really care about freedom, you would not be championing this act.

I know that Governor Rick Perry stated he is not ruling it out. This is just to test the waters and to see how people react. Fact is most Texans agree with Governor Perry.

In the coming days, weeks, months this revelation may transform from fantasy to reality.

Everyone must agree that Governor Rick Perry is the man.

He is doing what he thinks is the right thing. Refusing the "stimulus" money is on the right track to taking our government back. To threaten the dissolution of the United States of America is borderline terrorist. The Unification of this nation is what makes us so strong. Many of us will never agree on exactly the same thing. ou and I will agree that gun control is detrimental to the preservation of the Constitution, but the way we formulate our strategies is quite different. A spoiled child picks up their toys and leaves if they are not being treated the way they feel they should be treated. The governor has to be careful to not paint himself into a corner. If he threatens to secede, then does not, the socialists win. If he threatens to secede and starts, the socialists win.

Does that answer some of your questions?

Mr. 9toe,

that just sounds cool...Mr 9toe. You and I are intelligent enought to understand what the act of seceding does to the United States of America, but there are a lot of people that ACORN has their grips on that do not. The article Manny posted is a good source of information, it was his title that misled.
Discussions can be good or bad. A circular agruement is a discussion, but it does nothing to pass on information.

Kind of a nonsensical idea intellectually. I am one of the few who will actually be paying the new higher tax rates, and while I do not much dig it, I do not at all see it being worth civil war. We remain fortunate to be Americans, and the notion that we are going to take our bat and go home every time somebody we don't like gets elected makes me embarrassed for us.

I have been around for a while. There was a time when nobody imagined that Ronald Reagan could be elected President either. The pendulum always naturally swings, and Bush did a tremendous amount to damage Republican credentials. He was no conservative, by any measure. I tend toward a William F. Buckley kind of conservatism that you don't see much any more. Fiscal responsibility, avoidance of foreign entanglements unless they are clearly in our strategic interest, eg Atom Bombs for Afghanistan, but probably just a Black ops hit on Saddam and his henchmen

I don't give a rats ass if somebody gets an abortion or two lesbians get married. I do not see any constitutional issue with either. These are just distractions from real conservative issues. How about line item veto's, and a balanced budget amendment, and transitioning folks out of welfare to work, and streamlining the criminal appeals process, and about a bazzilion more issues that are too important to solve for us to be talking about secession. Actually secession from either the left or right could be construed as treason. Just one old farts opinion.

Mexico would take it back. Texas may be a big state, but it would make a small, weak nation.

You make very good sense. I liked Goldwater also. When I did a short stint in the Calif Nat Guard, Ronald Reagan was my boss as he was Gov of Kalifornia. I don't care if a Liberal marries his vacuum cleaner, I just don't need to hear about it or see it.
Abortion is a very personal thing between themselves and their higherpower whatever that is. No I am not in AA. That is for quitters.
Hollywood is a major problem, seems all the idiot savants became actors, then the world's greatest authority on what is right for the rest of us peons. I boycott all extreme left based movies, tv shows, talk shows and the media. I subscribe to internet blogs, wire services and foreign news services, so that I may keep and eye on what the Loonies are up to or proposing.
I let advertisers know what ideology they are supporting and how I won't buy their products. Have I made a difference, probably not.
We need more people to be vocal re: their feelings and views.
Thanks for listening, I feel better, knowing I have a somewhat kindred spirit out there.

Im a decendant of Sam Houston. For Texas to secede from this great nation would be a foolish thing. We fought to make this a nation to include Texas and to make Texas a great state. I guess everything is bigger in Texas including EGO. Get rid of that governor he is an idiot. Perhaps if Texas does secede i will become Texas's 2nd President. If i do ill just make them a part of the USA again lol.

Gov. Perry

Republican Texas is simply saying the Feds arent listening to the people once again. The Gov was indeed using the press to get a message across, or his boys were sampling the whiskey again before the conference (probably the latter). Dont read too much into this though. Press conferences are death traps.
(p.s. I know I speak for most born Texans...It'll be a cold day in hell before the Mexican flag will fly over this state ever again)

Sam Houston

Texas will never submit to mexico anyway. Sam Houston took 700 half starved men on horseback against 1500 mexicans and defeated them in 18 minutes. He was shot in his LEFT yes it was his left ankle. Was bleeding his boot full of blood. His horse also got shot so he blew a mexican off his horse and stoled that mexicans horse and kept fighting. Listen to me. We still have heroes like that here in the USA and in Texas. Problem is Mexico, Afghans, Columbia and other countries are shipping drugs into the USA to MESS us up. They will catch the druggies all stoned in their neighbours houses smoking a joint and kill us all. So as long as we as a nation will get off those drugs we still have heroes. With those drugs we have vegetables. And without the USA Texas will become a very small nation. They could be helpless without us. Am I gonna have to follow in the footsteps of my ancestor and raise an army to assist Texas once again?? Im not from Texas but I love the place because its a part of the nation I live in and a part of my family history. We cannot let this take place.
