“Gift Cards for Guns” Avondale and Phoenix Police gun buy back program
The Phoenix and Avondale Police Departments are holding a Gun Buyback Event designed to bring attention to gun safety issues and allow citizens to turn in firearms for a reward. The event tomorrow, Saturday, December 3, runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The departments are joining St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital, the Trauma Center at Maricopa Medical Center, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and other community organizations in the “Gift Cards for Guns” event.
“Gun buy-backs are an effective tool in the prevention of gun violence in our community and lessens the opportunity for a gun to be stolen and used in another crime,” states Det. Reuben Gonzales, spokesperson for the Avondale Police Department.
According to the Arizona Child Fatality Review, on average at least two children a month died as a result of gun-related injuries. What’s more, one-fifth of all guns in the home of families with children are kept both loaded and unlocked. This community partnership is an important step in educating the public and reducing gun-related injuries.
The completely anonymous, no questions asked event will take place at the following Phoenix and Avondale locations:
Phoenix Maryvale: Adam Diaz Senior Center
Phoenix South Mountain: Progressive Church of God in Christ
Phoenix Sunnyslope/ North Mountain: Covenant of Grace Church
Avondale: First Southern Baptist Church
Weapons such as handguns, rifles or shotguns that are operational will be exchanged for a $50 gift card to a local retailer.
Avondale and Phoenix Police Officers will accept and inspect all weapons brought to the collection site. Gun Buy Back Event Partners
