Tree question

We took down a couple of trees out back today and I started to split them. I noticed an odd smell and couldn't place it. The smell, I realized, is the same as the wood at Lowes - so this tree must be pine. It had leaves though. Do some pine trees have leaves and not needles?
Thanks guys,

Trees are like women, even though they are different colors and sizes, they pretty much smell the same. Pine trees have needles and pine cones.

Two species

Desidious are hardwood, leaves fall off, color change to leaves

Conifer are soft wood, needles and cones, no color change, always green leaves.

Hardwood burn hotter in a fire.
Softwood burns faster.
