Why Do Americans Own Guns Again? Teen Kills Mother Over Halo 3
Tuesday, 16 Dec 2008 15:38
Daniel Petric Teenager Daniel Petric shot his mother and father in the head after being denied Halo 3.

Prosecutors recounted the tragic incident to a Lorain County judge in Ohio this morning.

After attempting to sneak the Xbox 360 classic Halo 3 into his house, Daniel Petric, aged 17, was caught by his parents who consequentially confiscated the game. The game was locked away in his parent's closet, where a 9mm handgun was reportedly kept.

Daniel Petric took the game and handgun from the closet and took them to his parents, asking them to close their eyes to await a surprise.

Mark Petric, Daniel's father, told the court that he had expected a pleasant surprise, but found his head had gone numb. He had been shot in the head, as had his wife Susa Petric, 43, who died instantaneously.

Daniel then put the gun in his father's hand, saying "Hey Dad, here's your gun. Take it."

Mark Petric only lived due to his daughter and her husband returning home to find him yelling for help. Daniel attempted to bloke their entrance, explaining that "Mom and Dad had a big argument."

The shooting took place last year, when Daniel was aged 16. Since the incident Mark has visited his son in jail, accepting his heartfelt apology;

"Dad, I'm so sorry for what I did to Mom, to you and to the family. I'm so glad you are alive."

"You're my son," Mark Petric responded. "You're my boy."

Daniel Petric's lawyers also told the judge that due to a snowboarding accident, Daniel was under great stress with a sever infection, leaving him homebound for nearly year, with nothing but video games to entertain himself.

So what's to blame? Video games? The parents for confiscating the game, the boy's deranged mind, or the fact that Daniel could get hold of a gun?

I'll go for a combination of the last two. Lets not play the connection to video games too strongly here. It was his passion to get hold of the game and not the virtual "killing," that led him to this crazed act of violence.

His parents acted responsibly, though over-parenting could have led their son to become distant and even angry with his parents during his year at home.

What's the biggest factor? Guns. Guns don't kill people, people kill people, but especially if they have a gun. Performing the same swift action with a knife is less believable, since the jump from an instantaneous head shot to stabbing your mother, is quite a big one.

"Canadian's own guns, and there's magnitudes less gun murders there." There's less. Really, why do you need guns except to shoot a pigeon, or a deer? You're not a policeman. You can't ensure that you're children won't get hold of your gun. You can't hold yourself to be a responsible adult when you return home angry, drunk and volatile.

Just bury the damn thing, change the constitution and ban guns. Stop blaming violent video games and Marilyn Manson. Enough is enough. These tragic murders need to stop.

Stupid people

Sounds like the boy needed some help. Always easier to blame it on the gun and not the person using the gun. I have never seen a gun yet to shoot itself without a person working the trigger.

i guess this bias jackass of an author forgot to possibly blame the parents for doing a piss poor job of raising there kid, not that it would excuse his behavior in the least though. I hope this kid gets the death penalty.

Shooting someone over a video game...................................... nope not a good reason.

Video game shooting

This is just a sign of the times, kids spend too much time in front of the TV and the parent let them just to have peace themselves.

They get hooked and them look what happens. my kid will never play games on tv that often with all the outside world calling him to play.

And if you own a gun educated your kids so it not a mystery to them!

Its our right, gun, laser gun its still our right to own.

Over parenting?

My son is only 14 months old, so I have a while yet to have to worry about it, but I can't understand the use of the word "overparenting". I was under the impression that it was our responsibility as parents to be in our kids' shit, guiding them with a loving word or a firm ass-whipping until they leave the nest. I don't see how someone can parent too much. Sure, the kids will go out of your sight and they will have to learn some things on their own, but any parent who doesn't know the name of their child's teacher, best friend and best friend's parents is a failure and is asking for their kid to be a screw-up. By knowing your child and what is going on in his or her life, you will be able to see behavioral problems forming. A kid doesn't just become a psycho instantly. The biggest factor in this case? The failure of the parents to teach their son how to accept that he doesn't get everything he wants in life. The parents got what they deserved and hopefully the reporter does a piece on the ease of access to prison shanks after his heroic little boy gets turned into a prison pin cushion

parents and kids

i have some experience with kids and guns.my two older kids(my daughter-10,my son-8)have been shooting for three years now.i started them out on the Daisy Red Ryder BB Guns. After two years of training(gun safety, targets, and distance)they began to participate in 4H Junior Rifle League shooting .22 rifles at set distances and positions. My children have learned how to safely shoot their rifles from the benchrest, prone, kneeling and off hand positions at both 50 feet(my son)and 50 yards(my daughter). It soon grew into "dad,so and so wants to shoot with us".I have been taking my kids' friends(with parent permission,of course!)to the range. My daughter's friends(all girls)take to shooting and gun safety like ducks in water. My son's friends kinda take shooting as a joke, except for one of the boys. His dad can't own a gun(stupid shit when he was young!)but this boy is as serious as a heart attack when it come to shooting. He started out a few months ago with myself and my son going to our range.the first time i took him to the range i explained the rules(gun safety)to him.after explaining the basic rules to him,he,on his own, repeated them to me word for word ver batem!i set him and my son side by side on shooting benches with the exact same rifle(i have 2 Stevens Model 15B rifles)and proceeded to let them shoot.i knew without a doubt my son would do fine but i doubted about "the new kid".he did fine!,simply by watching my son shoot and operate his weapon.i have even tried"the new kid" on some of our bigger guns"SKS,.22 revolvers,.410 shotgun).he has performed great!Anyhoo, since all this has taken place, his parents have purchased him a new rifle and have asked me to let him join the Jr. Rifle League.i said"but of course!"and now this "didnt know anything" boy is one of our premiere shooters!so teach any and all kids you can!

Job well done. Very proud and heart warming story. Kids need to be taught, not scared to death and ridiculed by their liberal teachers in school.

that I have a very well developed sense of humor, and I must tell you that your posting, above, is not at all funny. You need to reassess what the word "kidding" normally means in good old USA English.
