Through gentle cultivation, overt discrimination, and subtle nudges, America is becoming a deeply divided nation. As a whole, nearly any cultural line can be found and used by our true enemies to divide us.
North vs. South > Wealthy Southerners vs. Poor Southerners > Blacks vs. Whites > Republicans vs. Democrats vs. Conservatives > etc..
So widespread are these fragmentations of our nation that people have even begun to assume its a necessity of existence. Our government has, in its short tenure, developed a peculiar pattern of favoring a formerly disenfranchised minority over all others. Now, on paper, this is either "dem darkies gettin' a hand out" or "enlightened social reform", depending on who you ask. But, it is nothing short of the government exploiting our fears and misunderstandings to keep us divided.
At the moment, we are a socially segregated society. Large scale intermixing of race, religion, and culture exists on paper. One only has to look at New York city as a shining example of this. But, look again. Housing discrimination ( Which was supported by the local government ) has left the city with speckles of intermixing with great swaths of near homogeneous racial purity. So why, after so many years, do we continue to live in such a way? Because we are told to. Our grandparents ( Perhaps great grand parents for some of you ) were told by the government that intermixing of race was bad. With a barrage of pseudo-scientific explanations and rubber stamped edicts, the overwhelming message was "Stay Divided.".
And so we did. Until the civil rights movement became a thundering of feet too loud to be ignored, and to "Heal" the wounds of a century and a half of discrimination, blacks were given rights and opportunities like none seen before. Which, I must admit, to some extent was a wise choice. But the well being of blacks was NOT the purpose of it. It was a well thought scheme to ensure that even "on the fence" northerners had a reason to hate blacks. Rather then heal the wounds of segregation and slavery, it gouged an entirely new one. In spite of one of the greatest displays of non-violent protest in our history, we remained a divided nation. Other racial groups begrudged ( And still do ) blacks for receiving preferential treatment, in spite of equitable social and economic difficulties. Blacks begrudged whites for the astounding displays of inhumanity done to peaceful protesters. And whites begrudged blacks for the same basic reason as the other minorities.
And, to this day, the machine grinds forward. On this very board, I've seen people very adamantly express their disgust towards people based on the fiction of our current "party politics". Imagine for a moment the countless disenfranchised groups in this nation, and imagine splitting them again along "party lines".
But I do not wish to overlook the strides made towards demonizing other groups. Homosexuals were and still are a favored target of "Pro Tradition" American's, who are fed irrational fears of gays going bump in the night by pastors, ministers and small town politicians across our nation. People of "unusual religion" are to be viewed with a suspicious eye, and if their beliefs aren't close to ours ( Monotheistic, vengeful god, one spouse, et-cetera ), then they are obviously not to be trusted.
So, assuming anyones still reading, why do this? Why take the time to orchestrate such a massive plot to do nothing but keep us all at eachother's throats?
Because if everyone is pointing fingers at one another, then nobody sees the man slipping quietly out of the back door with our collective wallets.
I must say this, fuck "party lines". Greed and corruption are knee deep on the red and blue sides of the great divide, and trying to blame one and turn to the other to solve it is just feeding the problem. Both parties approved the "Bailout" which funneled a still growing amount of our money into an over-sight proofed system ( As promised to the treasury secretary on condition of the bailout ). Both parties approved the war in Iraq, which has lead to trillions of dollars unaccounted for and billions more given to no-bid contracts to private companies. ( An excellent example being Haliburton ) Or the gross misuse of tax payer money that occurs on a literal daily basis with "ear marking", a task which both parties are guilty of.
And let us not forget a system which has turned palm greasing into a profession. So widespread is the practice of "lobbying" ( Again, this is a symptom of the system as a whole ) is that there are established and written RULES to regulate it. Lobbying is wholesale corruption, nothing more then taking senators and congressman to expensive dinners to ensure that the top 2% continue to exist in their state of nearly unimaginable power and wealth.
But, I ramble.
Stop, all of you, for a moment and consider if you hate, dislike, or flatly disagree with a group, ideal or race as a whole. And then ask why. Was it your culture, parents, media, education? And from there trace it back. I believe that in this case all roads lead to one place, and I fear that there is not a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Brothers, sisters, compatriots. We, as a nation, shall not, nay cannot, allow ourselves to be lead to the slaughter simply because we were too busy braying amongst ourselves to look at what is before us.
