Vaq's Hunting Thread

I know a lot of you don't hunt, however, as this discussion develops (I'm gonna try to steer, kinda like having 500HP and no rudder) I hope we touch on several different aspects of hunting.
I would like to start with, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GAME TO HUNT?
My favorite is Bobwhite Quail. It gets me outdoors in the winter when being indoors is mighty comfy. It keeps me moving and alert.
The Quail season here is late Oct. to the end of Dec. then a short season in Feb. (my favorite after all the indoor and holiday stuff).

In edit.
Thanks in advance for comments and replies.
I sincerely appreciate it but may have no response to some comments other than thanks.

Hunting thread.

My favorite thing to hunt....squirrel. Stop laughing at me! Yep, squirrel. That's becasue I've hunted it since I was a small boy. And every year, since I was 10 we have our annual family camping trip and squirrel hunt on my uncles land. Basically all the men in my family, all uncles, cousins etc, go out in the middle of my Uncles land, put up tents, sit up by a campfire, tell BS stories and the next morning go squirrel hunting. We have little contests like, whoever kills the squirrel with the biggest left nut, gets a prize. My family, we can't do anything without being competitive. And we have done this ever single year since I was 10, which means it's been going on for 24 years now straight. So, maybe that's why I like it so much. In the early fall, I usually use a shotgun because of all the brush and the squirrels tend to by high in the trees. In winter, use more of a .22.

Sounds like a fun family. Mine is ok but we have
never been on a trip like yours.
We have pulled some good river fishing trips.

Bring them all!! What you hunt with is your choice. Actually I'd like to see a bolt action .410, never seen one before. Of course there has been cheating occur once or twice. An Uncle mine brought in 8 very nice grey squirels one time, and we all noticed they looked suspicous. They were all wet looking. ANd kind of cold. Come to find out, he had picked off a few squirrels at various times before the hunting trip and he just stuck em in a freezer. Then come hunting trip time, he thawed em out and made like he just killed them that morning. You got to watch my bunch.

It belonged to an aunt and was left to me.
It has a tube magazine like a 22 and holds
6 rounds of 3in + one in the tube

That's a crock of shit.
A 410 is an experts gun. You have to
be right on target to hit anything.

I love this 410. I guess I'll have to start
reloading ammo for it. Ammo cost is
out of sight now.

Nothing like hunting in a field with weeds knee high
and a covey(SP?) of Quail fly up around you.
I have only hunted with 2 guys and we always used
a V formation. If someone scared up a covey they
hit the ground so the other guys had a shot. If you
get spooked you don't have a shot anyway
( my opinion)
I like a 26in 20ga and will bring back more ammo
and birds than most others. Mabe that's why I
like skeet shooting so much. Quail practice

I wouldn't really call

it hunting per se but my cousins husband, some buddies and I go out to the desert a few times a year and shoot rabbits, more of an attempt at population control than anything, I just take my AR, kills 'em as good as any.

More like

fishing with dynamite...lol, we go out at dusk with spotlights in hand and the little guys are everywhere, you can't shoot them fast enough. I think of real hunting as requiring a little more effort, tracking the game etc.

Wild Turkey is my favorite game to hunt, nothing like sitting in the woods and calling and watching a big ol tom come in at full strut! One of my goals in life is to get all four sub species eastern, oceola, merriams, and rio grande.

You guys better have a damn good reason for not being worker bees.. my SOCIAL SECURITY please..

sheesh.. Ok, so far i have learned that Hamp fishes with dynamite, and Brad has an uncomfortably Ebear like interest in left nuts of squirrels... hmm..

The oldest daughters husband (really great guy) is the hunter in the family.. he has a Javelina, and Antelope mount, both flirting with boon and Crockett's.. Funny.. i hunted a lot (bounty on coyote in 78 when i first moved to AZ.. Then just got out of it.. No reason, the back would keep me from doing anything except blinds these days, and i used to enjoy the stalk..

Hamp when we were in the PI one of my buddy's went out with a bunch of Filipinos...(F is right when your talking about a person. P when your talking about the country) So anyway hes expecting something out of national geographic third fishing with nets etc.. BAM, BAM, I remember him telling me they scared him to death.. then all the fish start floating to the surface, that whole dynamite thing works i guess...

Dove hunting is by far the most challenging I have experienced.
If they show up, you still gotta hit em on the fly.
Hmm, I've never been goose hunting. Can you bait geese?
I kind doubt it, federal migratory bird like dove.

Pheasant,

it's been so long ago that I had almost forgotten. When I was a teen in Scotland one of my friend's dad's was the game keeper for a large estate and he took us pheasant hunting. We used double barrels, mostly side by side 12ga, anything with more than two shots is considered 'bad form' in Brittan. I remember the Italians would come on hunting trips with their pumps and semi autos and how disgusted the locals were pow pow pow pow!!!.....anyhoo, pheasant are a fairly slow bird and not real hard to hit, I would bet that dove are quick little bastards.

shooting were 'domestically' raised in pens and were fattened up and slow, the lean and mean wild pheasant are probably another story, they are good eating though.

I'm with Catfish

I like to squirrel hunt. I find it relaxing and sometimes I even take a nap while waiting for the to come in.
I like to deer hunt also, just don't like dragging them out and dressing them. When I was younger we were so poor we used to deer hunt with a 20 Ga. and cut the shell around the brass so the entire shell would shoot out like a giant deer slug. Somehow now that I'm older that doesn't sound like a very bright idea.

To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them...’’ — Richard Henry Lee, 1787

I took a survival test and one of the questions was

You are on a 30ft boat that is sinking.
There is a deserted island in sight
You have a surf board you can use for a raft
You can take one tool or weapon of your choice
with you.

What would you take

any more but i hunt pheasant(now),deer, and bear.I've shot deer with rifle, shotgun, pistol, and blackpowder, this year they are opening the metro area up to doe tags, ought to be interesting.I stalk the deer with one other shooter, taking turns walking a big arc,it's a lot of fun to just get out in the woods to me too.Just thinking about it makes me wanna go hunt.Bear hunting gets the hair on my neck to stand up a time or two out in the woods,i burn honey to attract the bear,i don't bait them.I usually go right up by the Canadian border for that.

i tried being reasonable,i didn't like it, NRA LIFE MEMBER,USMC VETERAN

I had hoped for a completed thread that, when finished, would sort of "be a reference" for sustinance in a SHTF scenario. I am not at all opposed to starting over, but, that might leave out some pertinent info in the end.
Let's see what others think.

used to be clam, but I'm married now, so no longer on the list. I like rabbit and squirrel. I really don't separate the two because I hunt them both simultaneously. Squirrels deserve to die because they won't shut the fuck up when you're out for deer and they taste great dredged in crushed Ritz crackers and egg. Roasted rabbit in cheese sauce is the best food ever.
