ryo is very much interested in gas operating systems for rifles. would like to have everyone's opinion on what type of gas system is the best.

What is the purpose of the rifle and why should it be gas operated ?

ryo interest in how and why which gas system work best. it not about any particular rifle. am currently doing research on gas operating systems for our design team. this PSD gas piston system seem really well design. but also have interest in any other types such as the direct impingment system of the M16, and the gas operated rotating bolt short stroke piston system of the Steyr AUG and direct blowback that is use in many pistol and submachine gun and of course the AK style long stroke piston system. would just like to hear people's opinions on what system they think is best.

How much energy are you trying to control?
What is your expected rate of fire?
What is the expected Chamber & barrel life?
How much should the weapon weigh?
what other recoil mechanisms are going to be used?
cartridge dynamics?
cartridge diameter and length"?+ More ??
I believe all of these come together for the selected application.

Which one of these gas systems you're thinking about, can compare to what outcome you desire?
Based on that and my previous questions you should have a test application.

ryo have copy them down and will do research on these and get back to you. these are very important things to consider for what we are doing, but really the original question was not intended to be this technical. it was more of a general question comparing one type of system to another. but these are all good question and ryo will do best research possible and get back to you when have these answer.

Gas systems

Overall, a gas piston system is better than any other system out there in terms of reliability and durability. All the best designs out there use an operating rod of some sort. My recommendation for your PDW is that the op rod is mounted to the bottom, rather than above the barrel. This will allow the sighting system to be mounted closer to the bore, thus reducing the need to offset your point of aim when engaging very close targets

also ryo make a mistake, the show was Ultimate Weapons, but the episode was Close Quarters Combat not Firepower. and btw, the system is call the gas piston system according to victor chan. am still studying this and want to learn more about it because it sure seem like this will be the best system possible for our design team and the system of rifle we have in mind.
