WEARE, N.H. -- At 4 years old, Weare police K-9 Mica has already accomplished so much, including helping to find a missing 4-year-old boy. Now, Mica needs the community's help if she's going to survive.
News 9 first introduced Mica to viewers on Aug. 28, 2008, when the K-9 helped locate 4-year-old Cody, who disappeared in the woods behind his home. Since day one, Mica has been an outstanding officer on the Weare force.
"She's one of us. She's a partner," Weare police Sgt. Joseph Kelley said. "She tracks down lost children, elderly people. She certainly gets the bad guys every once and a while."
This past weekend, Mica's partner noticed something wasn't right. He took her to the veterinarian.
"I learned this past Saturday that Mica has cancer," Kelley said.
Mica's prognosis is good if she can get treatment right away, but the medical care is costly, and the town of Weare doesn't have the financial means to help.
"(I'm) devastated. The dog's been my partner the past three years," Kelley said.
Those familiar with Mica and her police work are trying to raise money to keep her healthy and on patrol.
"I know it's quite expensive. I have no idea what the bottom line would be, but anything we can do would be good," said Donald Lyons, who's raising money for Mica.
"Our decision is to treat the dog. At this point, we're trying to figure out how to get the financial means to do so," Kelley said.
Donations can be made to the Weare Police K-9 Relief Fund at any TD Bank branch.
