Well, it's official

We're in the market for a house here in southern AZ. We're going to become Arizonans. I guess we're going to buy a house, and whe we get order somewhere else, the wife's going to opt out and get out of the army and stay here, and I'll go wherevever I have to until I retire.

I hope you find a great deal on a house. There are some excellent deals here right now; probably some where you are also.
You mention that you'll keep going from assignment to assignment until you retire. How long have you been in, & when do you plan to retire, after 20 years or 30?

Bub, and sis (german) did tours of all the sig corp bases, and decided with a few years to go that SV was the best of all worlds.. Sure worked out for them.. all about Ft.H. is sorta a step up from all the other bases, as you already know.. and the town of SV is growing with the right constraints to keep it from sprawl.. I really think SV is undiscovered, and the problem will be if the word gets out, about all it has to offer..
Anyway..welcome to az pard.

I'll do 20 or 22 years, probably 20. I'm looking at trying for border patrol once I get out. I'll do that for 20 years, retire for good at 60 with two federal retiremnt checks every month for the rest of my life. Or I'll go the lawyer route. Don't really know right now, but I need to figure it out. Right now, being a lawyer seems more appealing.

Lawyer (if you're reasonably good at it) pays a lot better, and you usually don't go into harm's way. Maybe that's a minor point for you, since you've been putting yourself in harm's way for years. Border patrol might prove to be truly frustrating, the way the situation is now, but it might also be really interesting work. I always thought that I'd like it, but maybe that's because I didn't know enough about it.
My brother-in-law retired as a Sergeant Major in the Army after 30 years. He & his wife live not too far from Fort Smith, AR. Both his father and stepfather were career NCO's. He grew up on army bases all over the world. Their older son is a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, & is in flight school now (he's married to an Air Force sergeant, too). My brother-in-law has excellent retirement, & is working in the local school district, plus doing some construction work. He's happy with his life. All the family is very proud of him.

but I gotta tell ya. Several of my friends went to the trouble, and quit the profession. One never actually became a lawyer, but he graduated and went into furniture making (He was an O-3 in the marines in Nam). One bought a back hoe and a dump truck. One managed to retire, but ran screaming out of the building, and one quit law school twice after only a few weeks. It's a dog eat dog world.

honor. And I get physical in things I'm not good at (Ever see a guy get his shorts ripped down mid-air while going for a layup?), so I may look into other things. I really wanted to be a psychiatrist, but the wife said my advice to all my patients would be to go get a 9mm and blow off steam at the range. I don't know what I'll do.

I was asking my brother about this while he was up, did his 20 retired as a major (mustang ocs) then another 20 at Greeley hall for DOD. He indicated it was still a popular deal for retired RA to go into DOD, and is doing just what you talked about.
Man don't do the lawyer (hate that word) thing.. We have respect for ya now.. Besides you have to do some pro bono stuff, and your luck it would be defending some body that neeeded to be shot.

I just wonder how much money I could really make around here. I'd NEVER do family law. As soon as custody of kids comes up, my objectivity would be hard to maintain.
