But truthfully its what your most comfortable with in a fire arm. Im no expert but in rifle catagories I am pretty good. Whats the caliber your lookin for? And if ya want a M1A then may I suggest you save up a bit more and then get one. But also I dont know if your interested in some old timey rifles but you can get a mosin nagant very cheaply for aroun $75 bones all the way up to $400+ for sniper varients.

You might check put the Ruger Mini 30
Very nice and can be converted

If you participate in a Civilian Marksmanship approved program, you could buy an M1 Garand from them-they have a special grade variety (collector grade) for $895 right now. CMP states these rifles are in excellent/almost new condition, and they appear to be in stock now (15-30 day ship time). That'd leave ya some extra cash for ammunition too.
Here's the description from the CMP site:
M1 Garand, Service Grade Springfield Special.
allow 15-30 days for delivery.
SA collector grade metal in excellent almost new condition. Walnut stocks and handguards and associated hardware are new manufacture. NOT original SA manufacture.
Not sure if you'd consider it "tacticool" or not, but these are a great piece of history in .308 Winchester (some are 30-06 though). If you really want that M1A though, I'd keep saving up.

I've been watching that on the
Out Door Channel every Wed.
A poor boy on disability has to save
a long time.
I trained with the M1 and fell in love
with it.
Gen Patton said it was the greatest
invention in the military.

I also believe the Garand was one of the deciding factors during WWII, and this has been backed up by several people more knowledgeable on the subject than I (Patton would certainly count as one of those men!). I've had the opportunity to shoot one on a few occasions, one of my buddy's up here has access to one. I'll pick one up eventually, but it'll probably be a year or two until I'm ready to get one for myself from the CMP.
I plan on bulding a display case for the Garand and Mosin Nagant (once I pick up the Garand, that is) and add some of the family medals to the case alongside the rifles that my relatives would have used during the War as a tribute to my family's ancestors.

if you don't want an AR, but want tacticool.... you need the M1A socom II. discussion over. if you want longer than 16" bbl, the squad scout is a great rifle also

Thanks all of y'all for your comments! but I already have a nice SA m1 garand from cmp and a mosin naget, and a ar15 flat top. Not real sure what a ruger mini 30 is? I do want a 308 just not sure if I want a ar10 or m1a socom 16. Who makes the best ar10 rifle at a good price? I can get a new m1a socom 16 for about $1,500 anybody have one?
Reaper308
There are quite a few newer .308 AR's that have come out within the past few years. I'm looking at an LMT MWS myself. Some examples of them are the LWRC REPR, POF MRR, LMT MWS. Those are all piston rifles and will be quite a bit more expensive. I'm doing some research and field testing to see if the piston .308's suffer from the same carrier tilt problems that the 5.56 piston AR's do. The SCAR also comes in .308. I'm sure the ACR will release its .308 to the civilian market very soon if it hasent already. Then there is always the LaRue OBR/OSR or the KAC SR-25. All of these rifles will be above the dollar amount you mentioned.
You can still find less expensive AR's (under $1500) that will be pretty good from DPMS, Bushmaster, and Armalite. With DPMS you'll get a pretty good rifle for the money.
I don't have a socom, but I have a squad scout... one of my favorite rifles.

Thank for the help man, I've made up my mind though, I'm goin to save a little more and buy a socom 16. Thanks again everyone!

Yup,
I was asked by my gun store if I wanted the 308 SCAR they had about a month ago. I do not know if it was pre-order or on the shelf. I passed on the SCAR.
