so its 3am, youre half asleep, you hear a suspicious noise, and turns out an armed perp has busted in and is trying to steal your belongings, what gun do you have to neutralize the threat. i keep my mossberg m88 12 gauge under my bed so its easy to reach, and its already loaded with 5 00 buck 12 pellet low recoil rounds for maximum stopping power and a lil less recoil for quicker back up shots. most of my handguns are in my display cabinet but i have a lamp table on the side of my bed that has a glock 19 15 round 115+p+ in its drawer too. what about you guys

oh btw, im just curious about what other people has ready for home defense, and since i have a closed in fence surrounding my house with 3 rottweilers roaming inside the fence, i think i have a fairly good chance of not having to draw a gun on a perp. but if the 3 stooges seemed to be sleeping when a thief comes in, big dog daddy will be waiting with his boomstick.

I'm just another damn yankee with a loaded gun looking for some fun!

To do me any harm a perp has to
get by my alarm system. My alarm
consist of the normal electronic
system but I also have a battery
operated trip wire riged to a horn.If
someone did get in I have a New England
20 ga by the bed and a Taurus
357 in a night stand. I figure
I can whip their ass with the
shotgun (army hand to hand combat experiance)
and not have to shoot
anyone. As a rule most perps
arn't armed unless they pick
up yours.
I have a few what I call junk guns
around the house but my good stuff
is under the floor, in a wall or
stashed in my grandfather clock.
Having your guns on display is an invite
for someone you know to tell someone
else what you have and for them to
come get it.

That is my number one. This was my first gun. I am by far the most comfortable with it, and the accuracy is sick. My husband loves his SW 357.

I would love to keep it under the bed, for easy access, but the kids make that difficult. So for now, it is in a hide away up above. Still easy to access, just not easy for the little ones.

I have my Mossberg 88 right by the bed and have it loaded 00 buck,slug,00, slug and so forth. I figure there is not an intruder alive that can take that combination, even some meth head looking for trouble.

I have a Bushmaster with Aimpoint Comp M3 red dot, three level 3A vests for my wife, son, and I, two Kevlar helmets, and a Blackhawk chest rig with 12 magazines and a can of OC spray. On my side of the bed, I have a Glock 19 wih TLR-1 weaponlight and my wife has a Springfield XD subcompact. I like to have options, from an unarmed illegal asking for water at the back door to an invasion by the 9th Mongolian Horde. Oh, and don't forget my mini wienerdog and toy Pomeranian. They're small, but wiry.

I switch between a Remington model 870 and a Bennelli Super Nova loaded with 00 buckshot and a Rossi model 462 in .357 Magnum where I can reach them if needed, even in the dark. I switch out the shotguns to keep from weakening the mag. springs in them.

I understand what your saying raffy but, I'm a cheap-o. I can buy spring stock from brownells at a good price but, I figure why not just switch the shotguns around every month or so and not have to buy anything.

well, i may be a bit nutz on this subject. If the idiot or idiots decide that they want to mess around; they better have kevlar ontop of kevlar around their necks..
I have two chinese fighting swords within reach of my bed, each weighing in at 5lbs. I have a glock 19 hanging under the desk, throwning stars/ knives maybe the bersa in the drawer; It will all depend upon what I am feeling up to that day. Maybe the Highpoint 995, the fun little sucker that it is, maybe the infamous Mossberg 12 gauge with 00buckshot. Who knows what kind of mood I will be in if that day comes.
Well, I could keep going, but I am sure you have better things to do.

I keep my Taurus model 605 under my pillow. That's a .357 mag. snubby revolver. Since I live in a small apartment and I'm concerned about shooting through the walls into my neighbor's apartment, I loaded the snubby with .38+P 130gr. jhp's.

Way are Glocks "pieces of crap" if you don't mind helping me out. I have 3 of them, have put hundreds of rounds through them, never (really never) have ftf's or fte's, and can usually hit what I aim at (within reason). The 1911s feel better in the hand, I agree, but what else? Just curious.

I use the neighbor on a short leash as an alarm system. An bayonet mounted (the really long one)(Motto of the Bayonet:Kill) on my Mosin-Nagant serves as home protection. Along with my sack of hammers. For long distance work I use a spotter (called:Trapper) to tip me off then I should fire on them with my Star PD.

I don't like magnum noise or flash when I am indoors and still half asleep and at 15' I believe 158 grains of 38 is gonna hurt. If I have to get up or get a chance to get up then I switch to Mr 20 gauge Mossberg. I hear you wincing but it is scoped and loaded at all times with #4 shot, longest possible shooting distance in my house will leave the shot still in a 1 1/2" ball and still partially in the cup. It doesn't knock of my socks with a loud boom or blind me with a huge fireball and is plenty sufficient. If it will take a turkey at 35 yards it will ruin a boogerman's day at 7 yards. I also have a disabled brother and a legally blind sister living in the house with me and shooting through walls and ruining their day is a very large part of why I chose what I did and the loads I did. I have bigger and better for outside duty but this was bedside HD and that's what I have.

not need cannons for home defense. you in house and you up close and personal and if you want to take a burglar down all you need to do is shoot them in the kneecap and the pain will be so intense they will be incapacitate instantly. if feel life is in danger, if they have weapon for example then you have no choice but to shoot to kill, so center mass shot is best. many people will disagree with ryo, but overkill is irresponsible. a good 9mm or even a .22lr pistol or something like that 410 of yours at close range will do just fine. overkill is just plain irresponsible. might overpenetrate and bullet go sashaying out door or window or even through wall of house and heaven know where it wind up and if you hit innocent person is such way then you and not burglar are in big trouble. ryo live in north central texas and know these things. home defense not need powerful weapon like mossy 500 or .45 or Desert Tactical .50 cal. it just silly and could most likely get you in lot more trouble than from what could happen with just burglar. you on right path. follow your heart and good common sense and you and your family will be well protected at home.

Overkill does not exist. If you are justified in shooting someone, you are justified in killing them. Shooting someone is just like punching someone. Never rely on a one-hit knockout. I know of an incident in which a hostage taker in a car was shot in the chest through the windshield by a marksman armed with a .308 rifle. the bad guy got out of the car, and ran a block away, fatally shooting another police officer before collapsing and dying. I have also read of an incident in which a police officer was shot through the hand with a small caliber handgun, not normally considered a life threatening injury, but the officer went into shock and died. You can never say what a person will or will not do when shot in a certain area. Kneecapping someone is not a good idea. You engage the center mass of whatever the badguy shows you, with the intent of stopping their actions that gave you reason to shoot them in the first place. I don't know of any law enforcement professional who would agree with your assessment.

shooting someone in the knee (shooting to wound) will get you an assault with a deadly weapon charge, and possible wreckless endangerment, discharge of firearm in city limits etc... Not to mention the repercussions of civil court. If you are justified to use deadly force, use it. If you are not, don't even think about drawing your weapon. simple as that.

ryo stand by what say above. over penetration could indeed send round sashaying outside of house and heaven know where it go then. there ARE different schools of thought about this and ryo have been taught very best of skills for self protection and protection of loved ones, friends and home. ivan chan is close friend and would not deliberately give close friend bad advice and you should know this reaper chan. so even though this never really happen before, ryo suppose we will just have to agree to disagree about this neh. ryo mean no disrespect to you and you should know this too. it up to ivan chan to follow school of thought that he believe is best for him. ryo insist not need howitzer to protect home.

The only school of thought you need to worry about as far as where to shoot a bad guy is the legal one. The law doesn't recognize "shooting to wound". Shooting a bad guy in the head is the same as shooting him in the knee. As for the school of thought that recognizes the .22 LR as a preferred home defense weapon, I think you would be hard pressed to find support for that anywhere. The first consideration of a home defense weapon is that it stop the threat. A .22 can work, but it should definitely not be a first choice.

was in very vile and stinky bad mood and was just being combative. later in the day after ryo start to feel better did make sincere apology to reaper chan. however ryo still insist that not need howitzer to defend home. and also many many people only have one pistol or revolver to defend home and often this is .22 caliber. it better than nothing, but much more powerful pistol do really have problem of over penetration. how would you feel if in defending your home the bullet did over penetrate and go flying outside your house and kill innocent person walking down the street minding their own business ka such action negate any justifiable discharge of firearm inside your home. at such moment you become murderer just as the potential threat inside your home. there are other ways to defend your home from intruder besides just slaughtering them with too powerful of firearm. even so ryo understand your position too. we have more powerful weaponry to defend home besides .22 caliber too, but not rely soley on firearms to defend our home. and if the zombies come, then they can bring the best they got cause we got plenty of powerful weaponry to fight them neh. d:-)

Over Penetration

Over penetration is a serious consideration. A co-worker of mine gut shot a guy with a 9MM, the projectile still had enough energy to bury itself in a oak tree.

thats exactly why many soft point, JHP, and frangible rounds were developed (besides tissue damage). you can find low penetration rounds in most every caliber, with the exception of magnum hunting rifles, which will have a very very low percentage of over penetration. In the end, its your responsibility to know where your rounds are going, especially if you have kids in the house, so look into ammo that will stop in the target. Even LEA's have done studies on OP, before choosing a caliber/ammunition for their dept. If they feel comfortable sending a 165gr. .40 JHP into a suspect in public, I feel comfortable doing the same in the confinements of my home (knowing where everyone else is located). Just know where you're shooting, especially if you're packing hunting rounds or hot personal loads, which I don't recommend.

Look into mag safe, glaser safety slugs or frangible rounds....

I always carried powerballs in my .45acp but the other day I shot a varmint on my farm at close range and I was shocked there was no exit hole. I knew they wouldn’t go through a big body but I hit it in the neck! I’m putting a lot of thought in changing my carry load.

I don't like the idea, but it beats trying to beat up an intruder with a loaded shotgun. Sorry charles, I know you said you have "Army hand to hand experience" but imagine if they some how get the gun away from you. Why not just use a louisville slugger? Its more effective to beat someone with that a shotgun anyway.... and as I've stated before, I assume all intruders are armed. There are no "rules" when my family's lives are on the line.
