Then bounced across the room, and has yet to be found!?! I was putting my upper onto the lower for the first time today. When I pushed in the front pin that holds the two together something flew out hit me then disappeared. It kinda sounded like two different things hitting the floor, but I'am not sure. What were they, can I order more, and how can I prevent this in the future?

Help

That was probably the detent pin and spring, they hold in the lock pin that holds the upper front to the lower. good luck finding them. I have had that happen to me too. I had to buy a new pin kit and spring kit. If there is a gunshow near where you are you may be able to purchase just the pin and spring for a lot lesss than I paid.

Which way are my people going? I have to lead them there!

Shack.. Reap..

Were having a gun show in Wickenburg AZ this coming weekend.. This is a smaller show than in PHX . and while not as many black guns the show seems to always have a LOT of parts tables.. If you can A) confirm it is the detent pin and spring B) can't buy them separate from kit, then let me know.. Not thats hep on AR's but shouldn't those parts all be the same..

Happy to check this out for you on Sat and a snap to mail..

Reap, FYI.. this show is no FFL.. as a rule has pretty good prices to.. That part is hit and miss, but never been disappointed.. i'd talk you into meeting and buying me a beer, but going with the son-n-laws, and don't want "clown boy" to scare them. Hope this wasn't to off topic...sigh

Nah, still busier than all get out right now. But I'm taking some time off soon, so I'll be able to get on and catch up then.

Pin and spring

It sounds like the spring that holds the pin in. Good luck trying to find it, and I would be bring it to a gun shop, and have them look at it, and you may need to buy a new spring for the pin. AR 15s are known for that to happen. I know, it happen to me about three times. And I learn to be careful about those pins.

Flying parts

I've had this happen with plenty of guns before. From a S&W .22 that kept throwing off it's rear sights to a Desert Eagle .50 a friend of mine brought to free shoot during the academy that threw something out and hit me over the left eye (cut me, too.) There's nothing more disturbing, frustrating, or downright bad feeling as this. Hopefully things will be okay for your AR, Shakelford.

Detent and Spring

You might consider screwing your buffer tube in far enough that it catches the edge of the Detent Pin....

AR's are extremely simple to work on if one has some basic Mechanical Aptitude and a blow up graphic or picture to look at.

Hell, any firearm is simple to work on with such...

to many parts..

Dummy (this would be me) has a navy black powder 1851.. EMF mfg.. good looking, got it cheap cause it no longer locked on full cock.. Figured i'd drop it off at a smithie down the road.. then i start thinking about the 1851 that you can see in pictures thats mounted on an AZ wood plaque..

This is a little 3" pocket model.. thing is that it was originaly a "stage" prop.. It's made out of pot meatal, and non firing but original grips, and as it locks up and indexes with authority i'm thinking the cyl pawl, springs ("guts" but i didn't want to go all technical) might well be original or from a good black powder kit.. the amazing thing is it has one of the best triggers of all but maybe two of my handguns.. The definitiion of a great trigger. light, and NO warning before the sear break.. can you see this coming.. yep..

i took the prop apart and next thing i know it was BLAM.. parts are flying all over everywher.. theres a LOT more "guts" in those old single actions than i had any idea.. i've taken handguns apart for a long time..but this was my first.. obviously should have looked at one of the dozens of on line blue prints, but nope.. so i get them all together.. no way i can get my little stage prop 1851 to work.. matter of fact it has a gap where it wont fit together..

Sharing this in the best spirit of "im a dorkism".. so behind me on the wall is the plaque (check it out in pics..pretty cool) the little colt is still sitting on it.. except if you look close you can see that the hammer is not all the way down, and the frame has a slight gap, course it no longer cycles, locks up, or even has a trigger pull.. to ISD's point.. yep if one has some basic Mechanical Aptitude and a blow up graphic or picture to look at.. Navy thought i was a jet mech, and lot of wrenching on bikes.. but that doesn't help the fact that i turned this thing into a paperweight.
