What would you do?

One Halloween my wife took the kids trick- or-treating, when a man in a hockey mask came running out of some bushes with a real chain saw" no chain on it" and scared them. The chain saw was on, and scare the crap out of them. Now the question. How close would you allow this person to get to your family before you responded with deadly force? Remember they did not know it was a prank. If you wait to long then you run the risk of seeing one of your love one's mangled in front of you. If you respond with force and stop him, you have to answer to the court's.

It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.- Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

I wouldn't wait! I would rush him...out of reflex. I am no longer aloud in the largest haunted house in the States which is in Michigan (Erebus) because I rocked some guys teeth that grabbed my arm. It was totally innocent on his part and I almost got arrested. The girl I was with at the time(Pre-marriage) felt soo bad for the guy. I didn't get any that night:( But to answer the question I would, out of instinct, charge the guy. Which would be dumb on my part...me not being tougher then a chainsaw, But it would happen.

chainsaw

you would immediately know that this was a prank. if you felt actually threatened, you should at that point vocally express your concern as to the mans intent. most would straight away acknowledge it as a prank. if they did not respond, that would raise your query further and warrant the presentation of your weapon. at this point the man would do either one of two things. drop his saw and piss himself whimpering "it's a joke man"..., or just turn and run. the latter being the one you didn't want to deal with anyway. if, and ONLY IF he proceeded toward you or your family appearing to do bodily harm, you might have to use deadly force. that is a tough one to guess. it's Halloween. that one would be a civil case waiting to happen.

Thanks for response

These days you never know if something is going to happen. Just like the killing on that bus in Canada where that guy was decapitated.

It seems like halloween just gives the idiots an excuse to act a fool. If someone came at me and my family with a chainsaw, I would have to react out of instinct rather than sit there and ask him his intentions. I like that idea of pulling out the .40 cal with the laser sight and printing on this dudes chest. If he still wants to procede after you get a lock on him, then drop him like a bad habit. There are too many crazy bastards out there to take any chances like interviewing him or asking how he is feeling. This fruitbat might be off of his medications that night.

Chain Saw Reaction

I my self went to a haunted house in madison HTS, michigan and when my wife and i came out the guy in side with the same kind of mask chased us out of the haunted house and into the parking lot which at that time it was fun and games, part of the show) but when the guy with the chainsaw saw how freightend my wife was coming out of the house, he decided to finish the job by chasing her through the parking lot and was even more freightend as he wouldn't stop, so having my browning hi-power on me at that time(9mm) of course, i had to stop this guy in his tracks and told him to back off. He was well far away from the exit of the haunted house, so it was me and him. Moral of the story is never bring a chain saw to a gun fight. (True story), the guy shut that thing down fast, and appologized while looking at my low weaver ready stance and walked away.

its hard to say what a person would do in that situation unless it happined to him probly wouldnt get to worried unless he was real close but at that point you should be able to notice the bar had no chain its usally pretty obvious thats just me thought i run a chain saw for work every day and ya its a husky

The scenario is an excellent one to be discussed. It is difficult to come up with an appropriate response based on the information at hand. In my mind, the biggest factor would be distance and time. Although I would much rather prefer not to use unarmed defense techniques against a chainsaw wielding adversary, chances are that anyone setting up this scare will have picked a spot to come out of that gives the least reaction time, and thus, the greatest fear factor. drawing a concealed weapon may not be a viable option. As far as the legality of shooting that person, the easy answer is that as long as you believe your family or yourself is in imminent danger of death or severe bodily harm, as I'm sure you would with said chainsaw wielding maniac coming at you, the shoot should be completely justifiable. I'm no chainsaw expert, but I doubt if a normal person could determine whether or not there is a chain on the bar when a masked guy is coming at them revving the motor. I think the only place that fact would come into play would be your conscience (sp). I really enjoy this question. I would like to see more scenario-based questions, because for those of us who go about our day armed, what-ifs and wargaming ahead of time will greatly reduce the decision-making process if life turns bad for real.

ok here's one

you are walking out of a bar, And you see i big guy beating the living shit out of his much smaller female companion. , You are crrying and he picks up a beer bottle and is ready to hit her on the head. Do you draw your weapon and tell him to drop it? remember seconds count.

If you have a gun in a place that is serving alcohol, you are in violation of the law. Your CCW is not valid and they can take you in for illegal weapons. If you are drinking in said establishment, then you can have your CCW revoked as well.

Chain Saw Reaction

I'm surprised at the comments and quotes concerning the incident at hand. I liked some of the responses that i have read with out knowing the imput about to receive with that incident. Yes some of you can sit and anaylize that situation but to react when it is happening to you is so quite different. Did i really see a chain on that bar? how much lighting was their in the parking lot? how close was i to that machine? who is really behind that mask and is he really a nut, a carny, or someone who really likes to scare the shit out of people? So it is hard to say when you are really there and when someone is telling the storie. No, the lighting was bad, no i didn't want to get that close to that machine 3' or less within striking distance, and no i did not know who was behind that mask. The incident did not end as it should have if it was a prank. So you react to the facts at hand usually you don't have much time or any time to react at all.

reaction

thats tru if someone is 15ft away and running at you how much time do you have 2 sec mabey, not time to judge the bar if it has a chain or not especially if its dark there's a lot of factors here, was he just standing at a distance or moving in fast

That is true...

Unless you are faced with a situation, you don't know how you will react. My brother and his wife were working behind the counter of the family liquor store one night when a box cutter wielding robber stormed the counter. The natural reaction was shock and awe. They were stunned and didn't have time to reach for the gun that was under the counter. The dude was over the counter before either of them could get out of their seats. He was between them and the gun in otherwords. No choice at all at that point, risk getting your wife cut up or the guy finding the gun...or give the dude the cash and hope that he just goes away without harming anyone. They picked the later and all was for the best. They hit the alarm on the guys way out, fired a few shots at him in the dark, talked to the cops and the guy was caught and prosecuted for armed robbery. What I said to him afterwards was, the guy only had a box cutter, why didn't you stomp a mud hole in this guys ass and walk it dry? All he could say was he didn't want to get his wife hurt in the scrap. After seeing the tapes of the robbery, I can fully appreciate the position that he was put into and the decision he made to not frag this dudes ass. So I guess I don't know how I would react in that particular situation. The only difference that I would have would be that I would have the gun on my person at all times, not under the counter. At least I would have a chance to get the drop on him.

I went with my fiance and her nephew, i packed my g20c with me, if that happened, i would definitely open fire and possibly kill him, idiots like that are not needed in this world. i would answer to the court and tell them, it was a real chainsaw, he charged at us, they cannot charge anything since it was self defense, either that or i wait til he saw our faces off, and dont give me that it aint got no chain on it crap, dont charge at people with objects that can hurt them.

The reason why I don't go to Haunted Houses and I don't take my kids trick or treating...I would say "Stop I am about to shoot" If he keeps coming...double tap center mass....let the courts decide...but I stay home on ametuer night so I don't have those problems

you all are no fun. You go to a "haunted house" to be scared. You know going into the the situation, that you will likely be chased by a chainsaw. Maybe even see someone wielding a blood soaked machete. Quit crying! most large haunted houses are ran as businesses and wouldn't allow an actualy chain on the saw. They are all insured and have strict safety policies (unless you live in crackerjack kansas and go to cletus' farm walk). How many people are killed each year by the jason masked villan in the spook walk? I bet more people drown in their own urine. I have some great memories of halloween and haunted houses/trick or treating when I was a kid, and I would hate to deny my kids of those fun times just because I bought into the fear that fox news pumps into our living rooms each night. sure, pack your ccw if you want, but don't shoot the poor high school kid who works at the spook walk for minimum wage. Cut him some slack, he's going to get fired in a week anyways... and watch out... fire ants are known to eat babies in Africa.
