I'm still kinda new to shooting and was thinking of a rifle for my next purchase. Did a little research and came up with the DPMS Panther Lite 16 (5.56x45mm) - most people I talked to in person were not convinced but everything I read says they are solid. Bottom line is I can't find any in stock here in MD or on the net. I've also heard reports of anywhere from 60 days to 18 months for backorder delivery from the DPMS factory itself - I know the election fear is part of this - but is the rifle that good or what??? ...shoot 'em if ya got 'em!

DEMO
I have a DPMS AR 25 223. The weapon is high quality and out of stock. I also have the 22LR model for target, Sweet. Most of the manufacturers are backordered. DPMS is the best gun for the price. It rivals colt (in my opinion) and is the same thing as Bushmaster.
Also, most of the 'Black rifle' manufacturers have consolidated with each other. This may be part of the problem along with the election.

for the info Demo. Guess I better do some more searching.

fordvg

Death from Above
what do you think about them?
fordvg
the rock river, I have heard they are a good AR-15. I just have never seen one or shot one myself. Sorry
DEMO
I have a olympic arms ar-15 9mm. Very good results. Feeds like a dream. My friends say olypic rifles are shit, but my experience has been great....
fordvg
AR-15 and it had a nicer trigger on it than my Colt until I had a trigger job done. I shoot a 5 shot group with my brother's Olympic arm rifle that was under a dime at 240 yards out. Good shooting rifle.

well,no shit, after this election all of the so called black rifles and "assault" guns and AMMO! are real hard to find.this is what happens when people become worried about the second amendment!keep shopping and you will find the guns you want but watch the prices!they are real screwy right now!
undeniable
Most of the "name brand" ARs are real similar. The problem right now is you can't find any. You might be better off asking around for a good used one. Nothing I could find from a store was under $1,200.00 new. It also depends on what you want to use it for. I guess just ask people you know and they may know somebody who's got one for sale. Good luck.

I paid 600 bucks two years ago for my DPMS AR-15 . Seems proces have doubled all over
CraZ4Gunz
I just got one off the net for $1000+ - amazing how fast the prices jumped and still going up!! The days of below $700 are gone. Picking up a Glock 17 next and a Mossberg 5-something - is 12ga OK for home defense?? I've seen comment on the .410 gage not being strong enough. Man, there sure is a lot of stuff to learn!
Whats this about ammo now..? I plan to fire up the ol' 4x4 and bulk up A-S-A-S-P ! Any suggestions for VA/MD/PA area for decent AR ammo?
Reaper308
12 Ga. will be great protection from almost anything. the Moss 500 is a good choice.
I find that buying bulk ammo online is the cheapest. check out this little list that nitris put together for us.

I prefer www.ammunitiontogo.com . I use them all of the time with no problems.
As far as ammo for you AR, I suggest brass cases, or atleast zinc, nickel or brass plated. I stay away from lacquer coating on bi-matel cases in my american rifles (wolf, brown bear, golden tiger etc...) The lacquer can melt off and build up on the extractors causing failure and expensive repairs. (eastern bloc rifles are made for it so they usually have beefed up extractors). I would recommend buying brass cased ammo. If you want to go with cheaper russian ammo, I prefer barnaul, silver bear, and golden bear. They all seem to work great for me
Nitris
makes great rifles I have several had no problems with them and very tight groups.

05/12/09: I bought a panther lite 16 - A3 from Northern Firearms (MN) this week for $889. No wait, super fast, & very hassle free.
This was easy. I'm more worried about the ammo now.
LittleDragon
hi derecho and welcome to gunslot. this same weapon is available direct from DPMS Panther for only 730.00 dollar. did you buy yours with extra accessories
LittleDragon
Derecho
No. Everywhere I checked was out of stock incl locally. I had no wait, so maybe that was it or I just impulse bought ;) It came w/ 2 30-mags, case, sling. I mounted my Aimpoint today. Its so light I dont want to add anything else. I will shoot it Sunday - Cant wait! I have a new Ruger P95 I bought for $313 that will be shot for the first time also. Ammo is hard to get in Dallas right now, as I imagine everywhere else.
LittleDragon
many gun shop in plano and frisco and rowlet have plenty of most kind ammo if you not mind drive north a little way. was wonder if your Panther come with phosphated steel bolt and match stainless barrel too.

I talked to DPMS sales a couple of weeks ago looking for parts and they said that they are 12-18 months backlogged and will ONLY SHIP TO FFLs ALREADY IN THEIR DATABASE. But I have seen a few trickle into stores here in MD for $900-950 range with older new stock still in the $1000+ range. Guess it depends on where you live and if you are willing to wait for the factory to catch up to demand...I didn't - and it was worth the extra $100 bucks to me.
Guns are easy - ammo is another (expensive) story.
LittleDragon
they have standing policy of of only sell direct to FFL license people. so ryo understand. my pops only collect military rifles and carbines and other weaponry of this type. he captain in field for more than 25 year of federal paramilitary Special Forces group. my pops is Ironkoji on Gunslot. But he see two rifle at DPMS he seriously consider to buy soon.

Hope your dad can find those gunz local or on the net - Nobody knows what the POTUS will do in a year from now...hmmmm...maybe he/his crew already done it!!???
Derecho
Well Im finding out lately that the ammo is better found at the small shops rather than the big sporting good places in Dallas. I had to drive to Gander Mtn. Sherman just to find 9mm Luger last month. My P95 runs better off of Blazer ammo than Winchester. find the right ammo for the gun I guess...I made the drive.
Yeah my Panther A3 is phosphated bolt w/ chrome barrel. I really like it so far. LittleDragon thats cool about your Dad! I would love to buy a M1 Carbine. Sweet guns. Best wishes!
LittleDragon
both my little brother and my pops are going to buy new rifles soon. little brother decided on the DPMS Panther and my pops is going with the IWI Tavor 2, S.T.A.R. 21 designate marksman rifle. glad you like your A3. little brother is being very sneaky and close mouth about which Panther he gonna buy.
Hey come and hang with us more often. we lots of fun here.
Your friend,

Man that Tavor 2 is a wicked looking gun! I know he'll enjoy it. The only thing I commented to DPMS about was if they were going to sell the A3 w/ A1 front sight then it would help to go ahead and package a rear fold down sight for the flat top as a back up. The case latches are hard to get open too (might still be new as why). Very minor things though. DPMS is a awesome company in my mind as is Ruger. I'm glad their available to us. Your brother wil love his Panther. Happy shooting!
LittleDragon
You absolutely right about the IWI Tavor 2 system, including the S.T.A.R 21 DMR that my pops is going to purchase. After all the Tavor system was consider good enough to replace the venerable Uzi which serve in the IDF for more than 50 sai and over that half century the Israeli Forces kick very much butt with their Uzis neh. To be good enough to replace that, a new system cannot be just good, it have to be badass neh.
About your sights sir ka ryo willing to bet that if you contact ryo teacher and most very excellent friend here at Gunslot, greasypaws sensei, ryo is certain he can give you a few tip or so that will help solve the problem. this man is real genius with way of figuring out what problem is and how to fix. strongly recommend you contact him or also fordvg who is ryo best friend at Gunslot. ryo call him victor chan because he so very close friend. one of them is sure to help you solve this little problem.

has the best factory triggers available on the AR platform. It is better than many competition triggers. Try one and you will be amazed.
