Whats in a name??

i have heard the term

i have heard the term moniker that describes a variation of the origional. like colt's moniker commander in vietnam was a shorter carbine version of the M16 (before we had a M4) or moniker describing the addition of a M203 to an M4... not sure if this is what you are looking for
