What career field are you people in? If you're retired, what was the career you retired from? I am a professionally unemployed worm wrangler and intergalactic cage fighting champion, but those are my side jobs. I'm primarily a soldier. How do you people earn your money?

I need to work at a parts store. I wonder what kind of employee discount I'd get at Checker O'Reilly or Autozone.

We stock just

about everything you can think of brakes, chassis, electrical (engine
management), everything that Checker et al has, just a lot more of it.
We don't do collision parts, exhaust or Hi-po stuff, we source that from
local vendors.
I get a great discount on parts, 20% below wholesale.

I don't know how familiar you are with Ford truck parts, so I'll ask and maybe you know a source for an answer. Ford diesels come with two different types of connecting rods. Powdered Metal (PMR) and forged. My truck has PMR, and they are not good for the power levels I'm looking at going to. Do you know how to figure out what years had forged rods? I found aftermarket forged rods, but they run 2600 bucks a set.

Hey Runaway check with

your local International truck dealer they make the engines and don't mark the parts up like ford does. If you give me a Vin nuber off the engine my brother is a parts suppervisor for International and I'll see what kinda discount I can get.

I guess I got cocky about lifting heavy shit at an early age.I was shorter and stockier than most of my friends and always had at least 50 pounds on them.last September when I quit working I was at my prime.5ft 5 in 270 pounds so I aint exactly a little guy.but my back finally said no more after yrs of heavy lifting and various car wrecks(rolled a Jeep 5 times it threw me out and rolled over me,etc)and lack of patience did me in.I always had a hard time waiting for help to lift stuff. When I worked in the machine shop I would lift 350 chevy short blocks(no heads)onto the tear down table by myself.I used to cut and split and stack numerous cords of firewood that I woould haul in on my own to the local senior citizens home so the folks would have wood for the fireplace and for the fire pit out back.never had help, never asked for it either.now I am broken and life just aint right.hope to get right soon but I wont go back to wrenching.I am wanting to go into interior design.designing garages and man caves.

I'll buy one of your trucks. I have about 4 dollars in savings I can give you. Are they turbocharged engines? Man, that'd be fun shoving a big turbo from there into my little truck.

I worked mostly in computers and was one of the first 'systems librarians.' I installed automated library systems, ethernet networks, and ran a few miles of wire. I'd hire my co-worker's kid and tie some wire to his leg and tell him to move through the crawl space to "the light" at the other end. If he made it through I'd buy him a Happy Meal. I was a CNE for Novell when it meant something and have some MCSE and Cisco training as well. I also wrote a column for 20 years in 'Computers in Libraries' and wrote some software for accounting and readability. The latter bought me my truck. I'm at a journeyman level in BASIC and dBase, which no one cares about any more. I also wrote six or seven books, mostly now obsolete. I was going to write the DaVinci Code--even researched it for a year, but Dan Brown beat me to it in spades. I also wrote "The Butcher's Bill" about the deaths, wounds, and other milestones in the Patrick O'Brian "Master & Commander" series (20+ books) which is available on-line free.

I was a Deputy Director at the end, but at that level stuff can get weird. Things got politically difficult for me at work so I managed to finangle some of my military time into the retirement system and retire early, probably good for everyone concerned as my attitude was at rock bottom. Everyone in the industry expected me to become an automation consultant, but I did not want to travel and decided to hang all of it up. Besides, I told my dog if he waited a couple of years I would stay home with him, so I needed to keep my promise to him. I've been home with him for almost six years now. My house is paid off and I don't owe anyone a dime. I won't touch the stock market with a twenty foot poll ever again (learned my lesson).

I've been lucky and it's not all my fault. I really don't deserve it. On the other hand, life has not always been easy. There have been two suicides in my family, and sometimes you just have to put your head down and slog through the shit and take the fire that comes your way. But when someone can get millions of dollars a year for hitting a ball you know life is not fair. I'm very conservative financially and have never lived beyond my means or gone into debt I could not handle. I hope everyone here can achieve whatever they want to achieve and that no huge obstacles get in your way

I was actually supposed to become a Starship Captain, but I accidentally got born a few centuries too early.

Holy shit, Schuyler

A simple little "What I did is way above the comprehension level of any of youse fuckheads here" would have been fine. I have a book in the works right now called The World According to Dave. Okay, I have the title. But that's a huge step. Well, that's what my literary voice tells me, anyway.

I have designed and built machines called
granulaters. A granulater grinds up scrap
material for reuse or disposal.
I have designed and built a machine to grind a wood
pallet into sawdust and remove the nails.in seconds
I really enjoyed that part of my life. It was really
a challenge with only 26 credit hours in
engineering.

try working auto parts, had a guy tell me he needed plugs for a 350 chevy, I asked what year? he said doesnt matter there all the same so I looked up the oldest year possible you old timers will remember these the plugs that were about as big as your hand. Guess what he brought them back and said they were wrong and said but there all the same guess who gave me the year of the car lol. Another guy bought a valve cover gasket for a ford 1.6L now they only had 1 gasket for all of these engs. Calls me on the phone and said it's wrong and he'll bring it in and show me. well didnt he feel like a idiot when I flipped the gasket the other way around and it fit.

19 years with the Parts plus DC here in Salt lake, some of these so called professional shops are anything but. Thats a fact..Never had two days off, paid ins, or holidays until i went to work for the state.

After i got out of the service in 71 Pop got me a job with WABCO building big trucks, Liked it but not exciting enough.. Spent some time on the road (got years missing in the 70's) Then settled down an managed an appliance store.. Had my job at Levitz in Tucson before i moved, same thing.. Then in my late 30's i started thinking about retirement, and get on the state gravy train which is DOC..

My only claim to fame, and believe me its not much is that for awhile i was being "looked at" in the fight world.. If you guys have heard of Kronk, thier the ones who handled Tommy Hearns, they opened a "west" in Tucson, and ive always done a little fighting, and being a white boy and being able to make a speed bag talk got some attention.. Ive got some wings and at 155 i "taped" real well.. Only problem is i wasn't good enough to even be a good spar opponent.. First time they put me in with a class fighter the "looks" stoped.. Fun stuff tho, and still my favorite sport..

seein' as how I have all these yrs workin' on iron that rolls down the road I decided that NAPA was the place for me.now this is back about 2 yrs ago.I didnt do the best in sales numbers but I could save a sale for every other salesman in the store even the manager always said that.I was there just shy of a yr and then this current economic cluster fuck happened. The manager calls me into the office and says its me or my co worker that has to go.Since I had a customer interested in hiring me I took the lay off(customer was DHL package service)my buddy still works there and I still get parts at cost.

I'm thinking about it myself. EVERYBODY hates cops. When you show up, the victims hate you because you didn't get there fast enough and the suspects hate you because you showed up and stopped their fun. Everybody loves the firemen. But, I'm a gun guy and there isn't much use for a "tactical" firefighter.

I plan on retireing (again) pretty soon. I have always had an interest in chemistry and want to spend the rest of my days devoted to changing beer into urine!

It's too late for me, save yourself.

Refrigeration Mechanic, specializing in Supermarkets. If it is supposed to be cold I've probably worked on it. From your residential refrigerator, or air conditioner to the refrigerated cold storage that takes up a city block. Now because of the current (disgusting) state of affairs with this administration, I will probably have to work until I die. Not to mention supporting you old bastards that got to retire before me!!lol

Then when the little neighbor dies/moves or sells out between us, we buy that one and we will have a compound. Room for the dogs to patrol, underground bunker, ammo dump, shooting range, distillery and ginormous gun shop....
Come on down
