Whooping cranes

I just spotted the second flock in as many weeks headed north. My first sighting last week was a flock of a dozen or so. This flock was much larger. I estimate around 40. I've always wanted to go to Aransas Pass in the winter to see them but never have. Seeing them en-route was pretty awe inspiring. I couldn't get my camera to focus on them at the altitude they were at but got a positive ID through my 10X binoculars. Maybe nobody cares, I thought it was cool!

Whooping cranes

I am with you Vaquero. A flock of birds is very awe inspiring. I am not a bird hunter but have been out and about when these flocks come over-head. It just kind of takes your breath away! The sound of their wings when they are circling and coming in for a landing is pretty incredible.

make fine targets

I remember an oldtimer tellin me a story of getting bounty on cranes. He would catch them sleeping on one leg all tucked up in a ball of feathers that would explode using heated up .225 winchester loads.
Sounds like fun, POOF

First time I shot a 20 gauge it was at a Finch that happened to land on a fence post about 15 feet in front of me. #9 bird shot, BOOM, it just disappeared.

I love watching and photographing birds. I have realized that one of the constants in army life are birds. No matter where I go, there will be birds and some of them are pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure I have a mating pair of Pilated Woodpeckers in the woods behind my house. It's cool because they're very uncommon in Missouri, and I have two.

Damn species dictated our training while at Bragg... Were not allowed to risk throwing off their mating cycles.

I find that nature, animals and photography are relaxing, cool to watch and some of the stuff you see is cool to get pic's of. Don't matter what kind of animal for that matter. Hell allot of the time animals make better humans than some humans do...

Ya'll got any idea how much of life goes unnoticed everyday? Insects, Birds, animalds, lizards, snakes, hell trees are all part of it but many never even see them when they are standing right next to them.
