Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House in D.C.; One from Illinois, another from Tennessee & a third from Kentucky.

They all go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The Tennessee contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well", he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Kentucky contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, 'I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.'

The Illinois contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, '$2,700.'

The official, incredulous, whispers back, 'You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?'

The Illinois contractor whispers back, '$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire that guy from Kentucky to fix the fence.'

'Done!' replies the government official.

And that my friends, is how it all works! !

sad but very true on how things work with our government.

That's a fact

I have a friend who is a consultant in IT (Information Techology, i.e.: Computers, data processing, and networks). He lives in Californicate, but works all over the States. He once submitted to Chicago Public Library to do a typical RFP (request for Proposal) for an Integrated Library System. These things cost millions of dollars each and six weeks of consulting would probably net him $20K or more. Next thing he knew he got sent an 'invitation' to contribute to the mayor's election campaign. He did not, and he did not get the job, either.

In a similar vein several years ago I submitted a resume to the same place for Head of IT, which is also my field. It's a big job and paid over $100K. After some soul searching I decided to back out so I withdrew my application. I got this funny call from someone on the selection board very upset with me for withdrawing, but she was whispering because she was 'trying to be discreet' and people might overhear her. Strange place, Chicago.

Is that a fact?

Do you have any specific examples you could share of this behavior on Bainbridge island? Or are you just ASSuming as much based on your vast understanding of human nature?
