The Barrett M82 rifle is a high-powered heavy sniper rifle designed and developed in by the Barrett Firearms Company of the United States. The weapon is currently used by numerous armies and units throughout the world, including the American Special Forces.
The Barrett M82 is also referred to as the "Light Fifty" for its heavy .50 caliber BMG (12.7 mm) load. The sniper rifle is found in two variants — the original M82A1 (and A3) and the popular bullpup M82A2. The M82A2 is however, no longer manufactured, though XM500 is often viewed as the weapons spiritual successor, in that it employs the bullpop configuration as well.
