The Beretta 21 Bobcat is a basic blowback pistol with a single and / or double action trigger mechanism. The pistol is fitted with a secure frame mounted thumb safety. The frame is made of aluminum alloy however the slide and barrel are either stainless steel or carbon. A truly remarkable feature of this gun is the 'tip-up' barrel. The barrel of the Beretta 21 pivots on a pin directly below the muzzle enabling the chamber to be loaded with the slide in a position closed. This process simplifies loading of the weapon as well as verifying the load status as the slide is often difficult to retract by hand.
The Bobcat 21 is available in either .25 ACP (6.35 mm) or .22 LR (with 7 or round magazine capacity) caliber. The .22 LR version is readily available in either stainless steel or black (called Inox by Beretta) versions, whereas the .25 ACP version is solely available in black.
