The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) adopted this handgun in 1990s for Special Operational units. Heckler & Koch developed this pistol, which was selected at the Colt OHWS by USSOCOM's program of Offensive Handgun Weapon System. Suppressor and laser aiming module was originally discovered by Knight's Armament Company (KAC) and Insight Technology respectively.
The MK23 is said to be as a pistol of match grade as well as at fifty yards it is capable of forming a two-inch group. The production of MK23 was started around 15 years ago in 1993. The MK23 has an extraordinary durability in hard environments, being corrosion-resistant and waterproof. It uses the design of hexagonal barrel that have resulted in the improvement of durability as well as accuracy.
MK23 also highlights magazine release and an ambidextrous safety on each of the sides of the frame. At the trigger guard rear edge there is the magazine release. Although, the trigger guard is broad enough for the use of gloves. On the left hand side, a decoking lever quietly lowers down the cocked hammer.
After a large number of testing, MK23 was found to be capable of shooting thousands of rounds without change of barrel. As it is reliable in callous conditions, MK23 is best choice for application by Special Forces. The .45 round (ACP) has a substantial amount of stopping power and that stopping power is retained even when it is suppressed.
However, the weight and the large size of MK23 have resulted in some criticism also. In answer to the criticisms, HK discovered The USP Tactical pistol that was based off the initial USP. The performance of MK23 was retained by the Tactical even without its bulky size and is capable of the application of suppressor.
MK23 pistol offers the shooters an excellent match grade accuracy that is equivalent to the handguns made of finest customs. However, it exceeds the requirements of most stringent operations that are demanded in a combat handgun ever.
Heckler & Koch MK23 gives such accuracy without any need for hand fitted parts, which is almost similar in custom built pistols that costs around extra thousand dollars. In the history of armaments, MK23 is the handgun, which was tested thoroughly.
The first Heckler & Koch MK23 was handed over to the U.S. Special Operations Command on first of May 1996 for operational deployment. It was the first calibre pistol in American Military service after the Government Model 1911A1.Thus, Heckler & Koch MK23 was the weapon to shoot sharply even in dark.
