The REC7 (formerly known as the M468)[1] is the designation for an upgrade to the M16/M4. The REC7 is manufactured by Barrett Firearms Company, who are probably best known for producing the M82 .50 caliber sniper rifle.
REC7 Barrett

Unlike possible replacements for the M16/M4 such as the now canceled XM8, the REC7 is not an entirely new rifle, instead it is only made up of an upper receiver (made by Barrett) that is attached to M16/M4 service rifle lower receivers and is compatible to many accessories intended for the M16/M4 family. It can also be mated to M16/M4 lower receivers currently in the possession of the US military. The rifle uses a short stroke piston mechanism, unlike the M16 or M4 which use direct impingement.
In addition, the REC7 uses the new 6.8 mm Remington SPC (6.8 x 43) rounds that are very similar in size to the 5.56 mm rounds used by the United States Military today. According to Barrett, the new 6.8 mm round is supposed to have 50% more stopping power than the 5.56 round and a longer effective range. The round has a slightly lower velocity than the 5.56 round, but Barrett claims it has 1.5 times the kinetic energy as the 5.56 mm round. The company claims that it is effective at six hundred meters and has a muzzle velocity of 2650 feet per second when fired from a 16 inch barrel. Like many AR-15 type rifles, such as the M16/M4, the barrel is threaded to allow muzzle attachments such as a suppressor. The REC7 employs the S.I.R. handguard (Selective Integration Rail) manufactured by ARMS Inc, which allows many military accessories such as a bipod, night vision devices, and combat optics to be placed on the rifle. In addition the SIR system had flip-up iron sights already built in to the system that can be used if used as a stand alone rifle.

I very much would like to see the military adopt some variation of this.

I would like to own one personally. I don't know much about them, I don't know if the weapon itself is any good.

I want it to be.

I want it to be simply because Mr Barrett kicks so much ass. He is a very big supporter of American freedoms. He wrote a scathing letter to the LAPD telling them to go fuck themselves, that he wouldn't sell them any more weapons, nor service the ones they had because of their efforts to ban weapons to the citizenry they are supposed to protect.

For that reason alone, I'll buy a weapon from him.

I wonder will he make me one of those in a .308? In a round of proven effectiveness.

Look at a DPMS Panther in .308, I think you will be very pleased with what they have done.

I had to mention this rifle when you asked about the Barrett REC7, and asked if they would make one in .308NATO. I also mention it because DPMS is just a few miles from me and they seem to be a really top notched operation. I have this rifle on my wish list and I think it is a little overlooked.
