HS Produkt (formerly I.M. Metal) manufactures these weapons in the city of Ozalj, Croatia and then licenses and sells the weapons in the US by Springfield Armory.

The Springfield Armory XD (X-Treme Duty) series of pistols are magazine fed, striker-fired, polymer-framed, semi-automatic handguns. Each premium handgun features an Ultra Safety Assurance (USA)Trigger System, double-stack high-capacity magazines, a 1911-style grip safety, a loaded chamber indicator, ambidextrous magazine release buttons, striker status indicator, and accessory rail.

Springfield Armory exclusively offers the XD to the US market in five different calibers: 9x19 mm, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, .45 GAP, and .45 ACP. Additionally, five primary models are available including a Compact version with a 4" barrel, a Sub-Compact model with a 3" barrel, a Tactical model with a 5" barrel, a Service model with a 4" barrel and a Ported V-10 model with a 4" barrel and upward-facing custom ports on the XD's slide to reduce muzzle rise and soften recoil. All five models in the XD line of weapons are available in one of four quality finishes: Black, Bi-Tone, OD Green, US Mil-Spec Flat Dark Earth (tan) and Black.

Springfield Armory XDMSpringfield Armory XDM

For the last few years, DefenseReview has received some pretty glowing feedback on the Springfield Armory XD45 (eXtreme Duty 45) .45 ACP pistol. One of the primary aspects of the XD45 pistol that the professionals we've interviewed appreciate is its fully-supported chamber which allows them to fire high-pressure +P and/or +P+ ammunition through it, which they can't do through a Glock 21 (G21) / Glock 21SF (G21SF) or Glock 30 (G30) / Glock 30SF (G30SF) .45 ACP pistols, since they do not have fully-supported chambers. One of these rounds is the LeMas Ltd. BMT APLP 85-grain (85gr) .45 CQB round, which has a muzzle velocity of well over 2,000 FPS out of a 5-inch (5") Government Model 1911 pistol, and will penetrate NIJ Level IIIA body armor (bullet-resistant vest) with no problem and devastate the tissue immediately behind it. "BMT APLP" stands for "Blended Metal Technology Armor-Piercing Limited-Penetration".

XD

I speak from first hand experience. I have owned an XD40 since Feb. and have ran several hundred rounds through it without one failure. I used it for my re-qualification for CCW, and our SRT bi-annual re-certification. I carry it on a daily basis and would bet my life on it hands down. I just purchased a XDm. Just when i thought you couldn't do better than perfect, Springfield proved me wrong......
Right out of the box both of them are more accurate, have a better grip feel, and are more comfortable to shoot than any pistol i have ever came in contact with. Functionality and ease of stripping combined with absolute performance make this one deadly weapon to carry.

i bought an XD-40 a few months ago and it has swiftly moved in to my number one pistol position. right out of the box it shot smoothly and with a high level of accuracy. i would LOVE to get my hands on one of those XDMs. a guy had one at the range the other day and it was sick.

I have shot almost all of the competitive composite semiautos, in both 9mm and 40S&W, and I must say the XD ranks with the best, regardless of price. My appraisal of this weapon is that it is not just excellent--it is superb. Ergonomics, balance, trigger, mag capacities, inherent accuracy, inherent safety, reliability after several thousand rounds, and concealability all are top notch, and the recoil does not exceed similar size 9mm's. The only reson I graded it 9.5, instead of 10 was to be a hard ass about the OEM sights. It's not that they are bad--only that they do not seem to match the overall quality level of the weapon they are mounted on.
One last comment: I installed a Crimson Trace laser, as soon as they were available. I was concerned that it might interfere with the great feel of the grip, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the grip actually felt BETTER with the Crimson Trace installed.
Although I have not handled a new XDm, I cannot imagine it being better than the XD.........Springfield Rocks, and so does Croatia!!

Could You.....

briefly describe what you believe to be better about the XDm. I am not being argumentative--only very curious about your informed opinion. I probably will not be able to handle one for some time, unless I happen to bump into some lucky new owner, at our little local range.

.40 is a little more than 9mm, and a little less than .45acp. you can get a 100 rds of winchester white box at walmart for about $25

XD vs 24/7

If you have small hands, i would recommend the Taurus 24/7. if your hands are large or XL do your self a favor and go with the XD. i have two XD's and owned the 24/7 in .45acp i am 6'3" with a large hand. when i shot the 24/7 my thumb would release the mag every time. this is why i sold the 24/7 to a friend who had small hands, he dose not have the same problem.

I had a 24/7 in 40S&W. I was not surprised that the form and function were very good. My wife's PT111 Millenium Pro has always been very good. The 24/7 is an upgraded PT111, and a very good one at that. It was accurate and reliable, BUT it did not fit in my hands like the XD does. My hand size requires, as an example, a Medium cadet golf glove, if that is any help.

For small hands I would go with the S&W M340...less the 6 1/2in
However, I am 6'3" as well and my hand are no where near small. I can't even fit two fingers on the 340.

Taurus 1911

depending upon that specific pistols features and condition, $500 may or may Not be a good price There are many different models of the basic Taurus 1911 so as to be confusing. but if you keep looking, you might find one NIB for very little more money
Check out Gunbroker.com. There are a number of them there, with no reserves. Also check Gunsamerica.com.

upgrade

you would need to buy a new xdm frame, the barrel, and the short reset trigger system... which is basically a whole new gun.
the better barrel and short reset trigger are the main functional differences, but you can change the size of the grips for your tiny little hands and some xdm's offer manual safeties.

i'm sure it has to do with the capacity. they are a little crazy on the laws for high cap mags. still i would check with a local dealer just to make sure.

I am looking to replace both my .45's that I carry for my local S.W.A.T. team. I currently have a EAA witness that has served me well over the past 7 years. How ever it does not have a light rail. The other is a Baby Eagle that is picky on ammo and likes to jam in protest to certain types of ammunition. The reason I bought the Baby Eagle was that the magazines are interchangable between the 2 guns. I am looking at the XD in .45 due to my current needs. I am also considering the Smith & Wesson M&P in .45. But the latter is in DA only and I am not a big fan of that. I prefer my DA/SA. So far the XD seems to fit what I am looking for. Its that or I come up with alot more money and get the H&K MK23. Due my budget I think the XD is my best bet. That or get the polymer verson of the EAA Witness. Problem there is finding a Blackhawk SERPA holster for them. If any one on here has any other suggestion's on a good fire arm to carry that is close to the XD let me know please.

I'm planning to get one. Which of these 3 is reliable when it comes to accuracy and durability? I read the torture test of XD 9. 17,000 rds. without a breakage, what about the 40 SW and 45 ACP ?

but the .40 S&W will give you quicker target re-acquisition after the shot, simply because of less recoil than the .45. As far a accuracy, they are all accurate. They will all give you an occational fly-away shot, but that will happen with any handgun. I have read many ballistics tests on the XD9 and the XD40 and they hold tight groups with just an occational fly-away. Same with the XD45. The real badass in the XD family is the XDm. They are refined with a match grade barrel, improved sights and reworked trigger. They are worth the extra money to acquire one. Plus, with any of the XD's, you get a ton of cool stuff in a great case. A win/win situation no matter which one you get.

thank you for the info. i agree xdm is the best but it is not available in ca. just stick to the xd. how about the durability, will they last longer. What is your idea with a glock 17? i find it hard to compare this two. which one is really good with this two guns. pricewise they are almost the same.

I would go with the Glock. Yeah, guys, I said it. For the money, the Glock is a better value than the XD. But if you are like me and have large hands, the Glock might bite you like it does me. The slide grabs the web of my thumb as it cycles. I have to say that Glocks are extremely reliable, accurate and very customizable. The XD is too young to have a bunch of aftermarket stuff yet, but just wait. They will catch up.
Another pro for the XD is that you can run +p and +p+ round through it. The Glock company recommends you don't do that. I have not heard of one blowing up while firing +p rounds through it but you just never know. I would hate for my Glock to blow up in my hand.

They don't sell XDm's in Cali? That sucks.

yup. they don't. the reason was doj did not approved the xdm's loaded chamber indicator and the cocked indicator. i think it does'nt make sense bacause its just have the same features as xd's. the diff. is that its only a new model with upgrades right?

i went to the gunstore on my way home, people are busy buying guns, it looks like everybody does, young, adults, asians, caucasians. i am thinking of buying a bullet-proof vest instead of another gun. in that way i really have a defense.hahaha.

Finally i got my xd 9, haven't shot it yet just lubricated it with break free oil. Im really satisfied the way it looks and feel. It has a Springfield Armory quality eventhough it is made in Croatia, low-priced handgun with an excellent quality. I also appreciate the goodies that came with it. Many people don't like the holster because it will scratch the slide, but what I did is sprayed silicone oil inside the holster and loosened the adjusment a tiny bit. This way whenever you holster it, its gonna feel slick and will not catch any sharp spots.

good morning ivan

Luckily when i finally decided to go with an xd, checked the gunstore and it was available, it just arrived. I saw a lot of glocks here even the 3rd gen. g22 rtf2 is available. i got 9 mil ammos(pmc n blazer) pmc costs a lot from $12 to 18.50 now. 45 acp got them from big 5 sporting goods for $24. maybe next month these ammos are hard to find again.

Gunstores here this mo. are ok on sales they have many stocks, i always check them every week. Try budsgunshop.com, they have good deals.

What i found out while inspecting XD 9's characteristics is that the magazine release is tight whenever you release a loaded magazine compared to the unloaded one. This probably from the pressure of the magazine spring pushing the ammos upwards. Compared to 1911's, Glock's and Sigs it feels a lot better, not too tight, not too loose but just right pressure to release a loaded magazine.

For me this is not a big issue and it will not bother me because in an actual firing range you will not release the magazine until you are finished with the rounds.

I bought XD .45 in 2006. As of this time it has over 2500 rnd's through it
with not even a hint of a failure of any kind. There isnt a 1911 I've seen
out there (Military or IPSC events) that can claim that. I love 1911's but this weapon is better in my opinion of course. Have not handled/fired Glock 21,30,36 so I cannot speak for them. For the money it cant be beat! For twice the money it still cant be beat. For what it's worth.

mentioned you were looking to buy a 1911 style pistol? I bought a Thompson Auto Ordnance and the trigger pull was heavy and rough as a cob. As soon as I got home from the gun store I broke it down and swapped out the factory guts with Colt parts left over from other 1911's I've had. Smooth and light trigger, very accurate. I had it throated to take SWC's for cheap shots:<)
Anyway, if you get a Colt clone you could do the same thing if it needs it. usually a fairly good gunsmith can work out all the probs cheaper than the higher priced pieces would cost..

the way i see it, in the longrun its a better option to pay more for a good gun. The clones are just that wanna be's.I've got a Jericho 941 9mm. that i love . and i've got a Taurus 24/7 .45 that is also a great gun, but one that if i could get a Kimber instead, i would'nt hesitate. Just a better gun.As I shoot more types of guns I get pickier.I would still highly reccomend the Taurus for its price and it shoots sweet.

Clones come in all flavors and I prefer the ones that are the real deal, like Thompson or Springfield. Another that I owned that was sweet was a Remington Rand. Also had a Singer (sewing machine Co.). I've never had any cheap junk since I have been known to "push" my hand loads. :<)

i will say this,,,if you got the money go for it...if you don't then get what you can afford. But I tend to buy great used guns before I'll buy a mediocer new gun.My fIRST GUN WAS A STOEGER COUGER 9MM.iTS A KNOCK OFF OF A bERRETA.I went to sell it and had a bitch of a time getting close to what i paid for it. Good Gun, but not close to my Jericho.

Awesome gun

I have shot a few guns and talked to more experienced shooters, and I feel confident saying this is a GREAT gun. I have one in .40S&W and it's an absolute BLAST to shoot. I would recommend this gun to anyone looking for a fun and reliable semi auto pistol.

XD 40 Malfunction

Just got a brand new XD 40 4''. Jammed every time, casing where the bullet seats gets hung on the top of the chamber. New Federal 180 gr fmj. Sent it in to Springfield to be fixed. I got it back and now it only jams on the first three shells. the other nine are ok since there isnt as much spring pressure pushing up on them. Gonna buy a new barrel i guess. just thought i would share that with everyone.

I fired the .45 version when I was in Florida earlier last year and liked it. I felt it had a far nicer feel that the Glack 17 I usually choose. Plus I got far more accurate shots from it too....is this common??

XD 40

I went to the range yesturday and ran thru a couple of hundred rounds. Fired puuurfectly. The only issue I had was when I tried to fully load the clips by hand. Im not a wimp but it required some effort to get the 12th and 13th rounds in the mag. Is this a normal problem ?

kronz - I have an XD45 and XDm9. They both get tough approaching full cap. I recommend the Maglula (sp). Some manufactures are starting to put these in the "kits" with the new guns. Check out Blackwater Proshop (yes that Blackwater). They are all over the place though.
http://proshop.blackwaterusa.com/Default.aspx Search under Butler Creek products. They have great service and are very knowledgeable. Go to maglula.com to see all of their products.

Love my XD .40

I've owned my XD since 2007. (The XDM wasn't out yet, but I couldn't own one here anyway.) This pistol fires perfectly, every time. I sometimes am a bit less than diligent on cleaning, and it does not seem to matter. It also feeds any kind of ammo that I put in it, new, reloaded, HP, etc. I could not be more satisfied with the XD, and I'm actually looking at a .45 Tactical XD. If I can only justify it with the warden, I mean wife....
