The assault rifle was initially designed and developed over a four month period, without any form of government funding. Sample models were on display at the 2007 SHOT Show in Orlando, Florida. The design of the assault rifle is still currently under further development and is tentatively scheduled for full commercial and governmental release within the first quarter of 2008.
The Masada represents a combination of several recent and popular rifle designs, ultimately becoming what is considered by its developers and designers to be the premier features of each in a lightweight, single, modular assault rifle system / platform. Design features from the FN SCAR (upper receiver, charging handle location), Armalite AR-18 (gas system), stock, the Heckler & Koch G3 (trigger pack), M16 (barrel, fire control group including trigger), and the Heckler & Koch G36/XM8 (liberal use of polymer components) are clearly utilized within the rifle. Magpul has also developed several features for the assault rifle, such as an adjustable gas regulator, a quick-change barrel/trunnion system, non-reciprocating charging handle, storage compartments located in the grip and stock and an integral flip-up front sight.
The Siege of Masada is where the rifle gets its name. Magpul company articles and press releases regarding the rifle clearly state that "Magpul Industries is not Jewish owned or Israeli backed, however Magpul has always found the story of the Masada as a bold example of defiance."

Some of the pictures I have looked at makes me think that there is a relatively large gap between the bolt carrier and the upper receiver wall. If that is true, wouldn't that make it easy to get a bunch of crap in the action. Would it effect the function like it would on an AR?

Well the name might present an issue if anyone in the US Military were to adopt it.
Other than that I would like to test it for them. The kind of testing that doesn't EVER seem to be done by weapons that the military adopts.
It seems that there is an Army General who always has this as a response to any critique of a weapon; "well when I cleaned the weapon properly in my office a million miles away from combat, I never had any problems with the weapon, therefore all the problems are operator error. It is easier to fix the operator than to fix the weapon"

personally i am excited about the magpul masada. it will be a very versatile weapon and in my opinion it will be a better and easier weapon system to "interchange" over the FN scar and the simular SIG commander.
