The pistol uses a Browning-type locking system. The intention of S&W was to target law enforcement and military personnel, and the weapon is also available for the lucrative civilian market.
Numerous quality safety features are fully featured on the M&P. A sear deactivation lever essentially requires the shooter to physically check the chamber while disassembling the weapon, and specifically does not require the shooter to manually pull the trigger during disassembly. Also fully utilized on the M&P is a very effective passive trigger safety, this prevents the weapon from firing unless the trigger is fully pulled, even if and when the weapon is dropped. An optional internal magazine and / or lock disconnect are also available on the weapon.
During the design of this firearm, S&W significantly focused on the ergonomics of the weapon and therefore as a result, S&W created three interchangeable palmswell grips that are including in small, medium and large. Additionally, the firearm features a reversible magazine release and an ambidextrous slide stop.
An equipped and fully integrated rail is located underneath the slide ont he front of the frame of the weapon for attaching lasers, flashlights and other accessories.
The M&P comes readily available in 9x19, .357 SIG, and .40 S&W calibers in either a compact or full size version (full with a 4.25 inch barrel and compact with a 3.5 inch barrel). In 2007, a full size .45 ACP version of the M&P was introduced equipped with a 4.5 inch barrel. Laslty, there are 10-round magazine versions of the weapon available for each pistol for specific use in the California market, and an additional option is Tritium sights which are available for all pistol options.
