Everytime I read it I laugh! Just reminds me of being a kid again. Climbing trees, mud pies, swimiming in creeks and ponds, rolling down grassy hills, picking blackberries and getting all scratched up.

50's and 60's ..

kids (self and friends) took .22 rifles in to school for show and tell after summer vacation..

every boy i knew had a knife on him.. most were pocket knifes.. all ok, but teachers would take a switch blade away..gave it back to you at the end of the day with a warning. during recess we'd all get together and try to stick them in the grass..

HS.. smoking was on the grass.. INSIDE the school.. none of this cross the road stuff.. the cafeteria opened onto a grass area with tables.. anywhere (any table) outside was a smoke zone.. Teachers smoked in their rooms.. not during class, but soon as the bell rang they lit up.

I remember smoking in all stores.. Same with libraries.. tho they might have had no smoking areas.. not sure.. Remember being "bounced" off a locker a time or two for ignoring a warning.

Funniest thing is now no kid is excluded from anything for fear his/her ego will be damaged, when i was in third grade.. ripe old age of 8..tried out for choir.. teacher says greg you can't sing good enough to even think about singing in the choir..kicked out of choir at 8.. honestly it didn't bother me at all.. only reason i remember is that kathy Snodgrass (for real here) sat next to me, and wore me out about not being good enough for choir. I nailed her in HS..

ok i didn't .. but sure wanted to..

I agree to a point.. In school they tell kids losing is second place bunch of crap... or it's for fun..hell no you're either the winner or loser. I do see alot of parents that don't want to raise their kids and dump them on the teachers. How'r kids gonna learn to have good sportsmanship. When my son was in little league got sick of parents crying about how come their kid didn't play infield... I don't know maybe if they could catch and field. Tell my kids if its worth doing, you gotta give 110% no half-assing it.

from the local district there was not much of it but all the control was local and what the hey, the schools got the kids WELL educated. Just look at all the great scientists and innovators of the '40s, '50's, '60s. Microsoft, Apple just to name 2 out of hundreds and they did not come from federal schools like kids today do.

federal schools?

how exactly does money destroy schools? What percentage of schools are federal as opposed to local? How do you determine what is "well" educated?

just curious...

They build monuments (excessively expensive school buildings) that are not necessary for the education of children. Sports compete with core studies.

Too much money is paid to union teachers who may or may not be qualified/safe to be in the classrooms. Great teachers who are worth the money are lost in the crowd of bad, mediocre and good teachers.

Clint, 100% of schools that accept money from Washington D.C. are virtual "federal schools". They take the money and the fed gov tells them what they'll teach.
Also, as long as they accept fed money they cannot have diverse curriculum, when they teach that there is more than one belief about how man came into being they'll be sued for violating the imaginary "separation of church and state" because they are getting fed money and OUR govmnt will not side with the schools because politicians are looking for votes. Schools get caught teaching trash sometimes like the ones in AZ teaching "Hispanic studies" but for the most part they can teach homosexual "lifestyle", reproductive choice, abortion or any other crap they please since control is in D.C. not the local board.

A well educated person is functional in society maintaining a checking account, buying a house, finding, keeping and advancing in a job. Look at the mess the gov made of getting people who apparently could not work the math into houses they could not pay for.
What was it recently about an employer being sued because they required a H.S. diploma of the potential employee? If they are not able to stay awake through H.S. how are they going to stay awake on the job?
That would never happen before the govmnt took so much control over schools.

The education in the one room schools in the early 20th century was superior to today's education because the children were educated as their parents wanted them to be. They got what they were paying for.

Clint, A well educated person can get into college without having to take remedial high school classes.

That sound about right?

On daisys thread but a great big GOOD MORNING.. ok thats disgusting.. see ebear's in ..good stuff.. no weekend rest up in the beav for pard whos out working.. Sam i saw that MN prototype, had a jeep book that showed the original testing (aberdeen i believe) it mentioned that the contract was hard fought .. the one posted sure looks like tough competition. This is analogous to the Pentagon being thought, planed, built in like 18 months.. Wonder how long either of these (jp project, or pentagon) would take today.. decades IF it could be done..

My pop had a thing against the school board empire builders.. Dad had a third grade education and wound up retiring as the VP of engineering for Letourneau Westinghouse.. I didn't thing it was that big a deal.. (back before i saw the "light") Obviously Pop knew a thing or three about work and management.. One time when they were living in PXH he asked me to follow him down so he could put their RV in storage. On the way back (this was Mesa area) he takes me down a back road.. We pasted Three HUGE office buildings.. monuments to the empire sorta thing. all school board.. He didn't say a word .. just stoped and pointed at each one.. Actually looking back on it.. This might have been one of the things that opened my eyes to "state" sponsered bureocracy, and how misdirected the lib mind set is..

okay

Daisy,
I am ignorant in this subject because I received a good education from a public school that received funds from local levies and taxes. The standards at which we were required to graduate were dictated from the Federal Government in the form of the Department of Education to insure we had a "well rounded" education (whatever that means). But that was 20 years or so ago.

What is your opinion on Pell grants? If a student accepts a Pell grant, are they unable to learn a diverse curriculum because they took money from the "govnmt"?

Do you not think it arrogant to make broad brush strokes and de-legitimize the public school system based on your opinion? Do you have numbers or proof that the federal government is brain washing the children? What does that say of the parents that do not talk to their children and ask them what they learned in school?

"The education in the one room schools in the early 20th century was superior to today's education because the children were educated as their parents wanted them to be. They got what they were paying for."
Can it not be said the same for today's students? I do not agree with the liberal agenda; however, metropolitan areas tend to vote democrat, and that is what the schools are teaching.

Does the government need to be schools? I think there needs to be a standard at which students are judged. Where that comes from is another question.

Another point I have contention with is getting into college. Why is that so important? Some of the most intelligent people I know have a degree from the military, or a trade school. The illusion of education having to be completed at University level is a relatively new idea. It used to be that you would find a mentor, he would teach you the business and you would succeed him, or start your own.

My cousin's son is in 11th grade and learning calculus. That is one year faster than I learned it. I would say that is evidence that students are learning more in schools now than 20 or so years ago.

clint

separation of church and state is real, it was written by Thomas Jefferson to reinforce to the Dansbury Baptist church that the state was to stay out of the church's business.

critique of government managed education.

Rather than agitate you and promote a heated debate which no one can win I'll simply sum up my position with this.

"...the children were educated as their parents wanted them to be. They got what they were paying for."

Please copy & paste the passage in the Constitution "separation of church and state".
Thanks

There is no separation of church and state in the U.S. Constitution, it was in a letter written by Mr Thomas Jefferson to the Ashbury Baptist Church in 1802.

http://www.loc.gov/loc/lcib/9806/danpre.html
A good explanation can be found here: http://www.allabouthistory.org/separation-of-church-and-state.htm

Actually, I would love to see an audit of the department of education. I agree with you that they are over stepping their boundaries. I was in a rambunctious mood, so i was playing devil's advocate. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers. LLE used to do it to me all the time...

But then again I want to see an audit of all government agencies/programs. So far the track record for government handling anything except over spending is atrocious.

LOL ! You and G having a good day?
All is swell here.

Little Casey had a basketball game yesterday, she scored 2 baskets (in the correct basket) and their team went on to win by 18 points.
While I was watching the game Mack was busy putting stickers all over the back of my shirt, the other ppl in the stands thought it was funny, I did too when I found out.
A lady I know was there with her tiny new born, she asked if I'd hold him, dumb question !
Lindsey, the martial arts girl baked a delicious valentines cake.

To think that some of my friends, here, would see me having fun being a devil's advocate and ruffling feathers, is---appalling [I learned that word from Newt Gingerich recently]. LMAO.

More to the point: It says [paraphrased] Congress is enjoined from passing any legislation that in effect would create a State or favored religion, or that would require a particular religion to be practiced. I think we can retrospectively forgive young Thom Jefferson for creating the concept of thus "building a wall of separation between Church and State", even though, IMO, that concept has gotten us into a good bit of extremeism, especially by various organizations like the ACLU, and the recent finding by some over-enthusiastic judge, who undoubtedly believes that Thom's concept allows the repeal of the First amendment.

What I am most concerned about in relation to this subject is the following. Obama's most significant mentor seems to be Saul Alinsky, the foremost neo-marxist of our time. One of Alinsky's important teachings is that--to get your program up, running and accepted, you must use all of the relevant tools available to you. Well folks--have you heard of the "tool" called the Presidential Executive Order? I have not heard of a legal challenge to any that were signed off as yet, or a challenge to whether such a tool is even constitutional, for that matter, when they have been used to circumvent* [nullify?] congressional intent. Just as an example--an Executive Order, gave the force of law to the concept of "Affirmative Action" and thus, created a whole new bureaucracy[The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs] to enforce the regulatory requirements apertaining thereto.
So let me ask you a question. What would you think, if B. H. Obama issued a Presidential Executive Order that would create, and require worship in, The Church of the United States of America. Too extreme a possibility?? It can't happen here?? Remember BHO's training--and remember who his mentor was/is................................
* I think there was one--when Truman nationalized the Steel industry. The SCOTUS declared he had no constitutional authority to do so.

Too old to fight, Too old to run, guess that's why I carry a gun! "would someone show this asshole the way out of town".[Rabbi Avram Belinski-aka "The Frisco Kid"]

mess if obama should decide to carry his shiite to the extreme BUT. His socialist agenda is like Indian Underware, it creeps up on your ass.

Trying to fix the problem is a felony punishable up to and including death. Like at Concord, April 1775, the opposition (Brits) has to behave in an outrageous way (destroy weapons), not their usual stealth takeover (obama). Highly unlikely they'll screw up and try to do it in one giant leap. Boiling frogs.
But just in case...
