And it also depends on what your job is. People sometimes get hit by mortar or rocket fire hitting the FOBs, but the majority of casualties sustained occur outside the wire. So infantry and MPs (The two MOS who work the most often outside the wire) suffer a higher rate of casualties. I don't know the hard numbers, but based on my experience (isn't that anecdotal evidence, or some similar term?), if you leave the wire in Iraq or Afghanistan, you are more likely to get killed than if you enter the perimeter of Chicago, Detroit, NYC, whatever.

I think thats what those stats are based off of. In anyway your a multi tour soldier and i'd rather believe your opinion than someone who's probably never been.

Any time I'm in a discussion involving numbers, I try to stay objective, because I know that my experiences are different from a lot of other servicemembers. I think I read that something like 15% of the servicemembers deployed are actually combat troops who go outside the wire, and the other 85% are support people. And while I'm sitting on my ass here in lovely Ft Huachuca, AZ surfing the internet for eight hours a day, 12-15 days a month as a desk sergeant, my 39 months in Iraq, 6 in Kuwait, and two in Egypt, all since 9/11, still puts me ahead of most in terms of time deployed. So things I have experienced have been based on more time spent outside the wire than most, so logically speaking, my experiences will include more close calls and bad days than a large number of servicemembers who have deployed. I have not, however, spent any time in Bronx (or is it The Bronx?), or Orange Mound in Memphis, or Cabrini-Green in Chicago. So objective stats, if you compare Memphis to Iraq, and the Orange Mound area to Iraq outside the wire, and compare all residents to all servicemembers, and police officers and gang members to combat troops, those stats may actually be correct.

Well i do know Memphis and NYC are some bad places to be at at night. The Bronx is ok in the day but at night you want to travel in a group of people, stay out of the shadows and side allys, and if you can, bring some sort of personal protection. Memphis is dangerous, day or night. I live 4 hrs away from Mempho (3hrs if the cops aint out) and i always take my dad's Glock 20 with me.

Hey you forgot South Central LA. You know the Liberal media and newspapers are NOT allowed to call it South Central LA anymore? Because that name has such a negative connotation, the people that live there will feel they are being singled out as a sub-standard quality of life people. I just don't want to compare it to Iraq, because some of the natives there (the Korean shop owners) actually have the balls to take up arms and protect themselves, while the Iraqi people are like so much liberal sheep, waiting to be given everything by the government. and by that group, I am assuming you're talking about blacks, on the same level as us. There are a huge percentage of blacks who have and continue to make this nation great. I know the stereotypical phrase is "I have lots of black friends", and that's not the phrase I use, because I don't have lots of friends at all. but I can say that I have trusted some black people with my life and have not been disappointed yet. While I do believe there is some sort of "work only hard enough to get by" mentality in their genes from the days of slavery, a HUGE part of the black population goes past that and acts as very valuable members of our society. I do not feel the same about muslims. While the number of decent citizens may be higher than that of potential terrorists and extremists, I don't think it's a huge majority. Muslims have not yet become an integral part of our national identity and I doubt they ever will.

an oppressed minority, it tells a story of one of the several minorities in our nation but the only ones that have failed to assimilate. In pre-European Africa there was no development of advanced society, very little in the way of permanent structures of even settlements. Those who have made the leap are, as I have often mentioned, valuable to our society. The large numbers who have failed or not tried are slugs, a burden on all of us.

runs, I agree, I have had a lot of friends over the years that were non-white. I don't care what color they are, if they are genuine, and down to earth. I am a simple guy and don't like drama and complicated selfish people. As far as, muslims, all I know is they (terrorists, however many there may be) are trying to kill Americans no matter what color they are. To them they are taught we are the bad guys, and yet we allow anyone to come to our country and share in the delight of what it is like to be Free, COMPLETELY FREE, religious and otherwise. This sounds sorta like the "some of my best friends" line. Knew a lot of military blacks, and those in the dept. were great. I actually feel sorry fot those older blacks who WERE discriminated against, and can imagine the embarrisment they feel with the current drop out rate (over 55%) and the incarceration rate, as well as the lack of black men taking responsibility for the kids theve fathered.. Just did a show this last Friday about the Black Founding Fathers.
It was eye-opening, because I will bet most here have never
heard of most of them...I did not, except for Frederick Douglas,
but that was a different section. There was a black man on the
picture of Washington Crossing the Delaware. The story behind
him is of him being a double agent (spy) against the British. Some
of these stories were just fought over, to have them included in
the new school text books (Texas fight recently)

Man, that is the best line I have heard in awhile! (Drive by!! Outstanding!) I started out as a 19k (M-1) and Ill date myself and tell you that I was a member of the very first training cycle at Ft. Knox (1982!!!) when that weapon was first deployed. I love those machines!! rolling across the battle field, carrying the biggest gun and knowing you can fly at 70 mph (well, with the governor off at least) w/ a full rack of ammo is a really good feeling!!
When I cross trained out, I missed the power of the M1. Nothing else like it.
