Driven it dozens of times.. check out Tucson, imagine a road (2 lane black top) that goes due west thru organ pipe NM.. passes kit peak which is a major observatory.. then Sells, then to 3 points.. You have a choice of heading south to the border and organ pipe natl monument, our north to Ajo.. (cool little Phelps Dodge mining town) ..
Then this road (like i can remember the name huh, and again away from my maps house sitting) intersects 8 at around its furthest N spot before it dives back down to Casa Grande.. This is the main route for everything, and thru the rez..
Went bike camping down at the Organ Pipe NM back in the 80's.. set up my tent on top of a mt Lion print.. The park HQ has (least had) cast imprints of mt Lion prints.. much bigger than you would think.. I remember what amazed me was looking at the prints (where i camped) and you would find them like every 12-15 feet apart.. Obviously the stride when running, and sorta humbling experiance..
The whole point was to see one, as this is the highest population of them (Growler Mt's) in AZ.. Nope didn't see any, but heard them, and remember thinking that was ENOUGH.. By the way if you go to wickenburg and head N on 89 just where it gets shaded is our Weaver Mt's. and Peeple Valley..
NUFF history and rambling..how are ya all..
First! greg- how have you been brother? Been a little while since we have had a chance to chat. I was up by Mount Baldy once, picking up the kids from a church teenager retreat. The kids were supposed to stay on site (church grounds) they have a big piece of dirt up there. Some of the ding dongs went off site and were playing in the deeper snow. A little while later (2 hours?) one of them came back to get an adult, saying they think they saw a Bobcat in a piece of pipe. Well, needless to say it was a big piece of pipe and what they saw (according to the size of the prints) it was a Mt Lion. Kind of freaked us all out! i would love to have seen it myself...
Had a lot of time in the Mt's backpacking and stuff when i was younger... Did the bike camp thing i mentioned.. nothing.. then one morning in Tucson i was driving in on the W side in the Tucson Mt's, and one ran across the road in front of me (couple hundred yds) 30 years are so pass, and were coming back home from Prescott and same thing, spooked one and it ran from cover across the road guessing about the same distance as the first sighting..
Odd thing is i really TRIED to see them, this was an issue for me, and even planed the bike trip i mentioned around it.. You can hear them sometimes.. I have maybe 5-6 times.. Least guessing thats what it was.. But sure hard (least for me) to see... Obviously pretty impressive, but to be honest not as much a 10 on the wow factor (again this is just my HO) as Eagles, or desert big horn sheep..
I doubt I will ever see one unless it's on tv or in a zoo. I would love to move to Prescott some day. I don't think that will ever happen. Just like life in general, the good Lord has a different plan for me, and I can't read his mind!!
