The Astra modelo 400 adopted by the Spanish military as theAstra Modelo 1921, was semi-automatic pistol produced by Spanish weapons manufacturer Astra-Unceta y Cia SA.

The 9mm Largo Astra modelo 400 was selected as the primary sidearm of the Spanish armed forces in 1921, replacing the Campo-Giro. It was itself replaced in 1946 by the Star Model A.

A total of around 105,000 were produced and sold to both Republican Spain and Nationalist Spain, the Chilean Navy, the Euzkadian government and Nazi Germany. Many were also sold on the open market.

The Astra 400 is designed for the 9 mm Largo round, with some experimental models chambered in 7.63mm Mannlicher, .32 ACP and .30 Luger. 9mm Largo rounds were often in short supply outside of Spain and though several other 9mm cartridges like the 9mm Luger could be fired in an emergency, this caused excessive wear and stress on the weapon and is not recomended.
