B-25 Mitchell Nose Gunner's View

B-25 Mitchell Nose Gunner's View

- Taken by me at an airshow on Saturday May 15, 2010
- THE RIDE WAS BEYOND WORDS!!!

The only spooky thing about being in the nose of a B-25 is realizing, after up through the narrow passageway, that in the event of an emergency, the nose gunner would have to crawl back through, put his parachute on, then attempt to bailout...I just don't see how you could do all of that in a plane going down out of control.

God Bless the men of the Greatest Generation.

That's bad ass,

can you imagine rata tatt tatting away as the ME109's are coming at you full song with their guns blazing, that would be some scary shit!

It would be...What I also realized while riding in it was that there is absolutely no armor watsoever throughout the plane...From watching all of the enemy gun camera footage from WWII, one good pass by an Me109 or Zero raking an aircraft from nose to tail would probably kill or wound all of the crew...The skin is so thin, that even an 8mm Mauser would sail right through without any problem.

Yep, it's an anti Aircraft sight, but I'm not sure if they actually used one or not...I would imagine they wouldn't have time to, but would instead try to walk the tracers into a plane.

Whats that gismo

under the gun? It kind'a looks like a bomb sight, you wouldn't think that the nose gunner would also be the bombardier, that sounds kind'a sketchy.

You're right, they Crew Chief told us that sight was an original Norden Bomb Sight...The Nose Gunner was the bombardier 1st & nose gunner 2nd.

Only if he lived

long enough to be either, man those aviators that flew those bombers had big brass ones that clank. At least the fighters were maneuverable, those big birds were sitting ducks when the fighter escorts bugged out.

I was poor as dirt going to State and my then wife bought me a ride with stick time in a B-17, Flew it over downtown Raleigh. I remember the smell but mostly sitting behind the pilot on the floor and feeling the plane vibrate. There isn't a vibrator on earth that can match that feel. Not that I have used any to know... at least not on myself!

I would still check

with the dealer as they don't always publish their recalls externally right away.
