Bad Spiders. Brown Recluse & Black Widows

Bad Spiders. Brown Recluse & Black Widows

The Black Widow is the one with the red hourglass on it. Pictures showing bodies and what they look like.
The BlackWidow bite looks like a bruise and is painful, yet not commonly deadly.

That Brown Recluse bites start out as a dimple in the skin and if not taken care of it can result in the bottom 2 pics.

Spiders are especially dangerous for young children and the elderly.

Scorpions are a stinging insect with that tail. The smaller the scorpion the worse it is.

A scorpion isn't an insect, it's an arachnid. And it's not necessarily the size of the scorpion, but one thing to look at is the size of the pincers and the size of the bulb at the stinger. While not 100 percent accurate, a good rule is the smaller the pincer or bulb, the more dangerous the scorpion.

Yes. Arachnids

All "bugs" are arthropods. Good cut and paste from Wikepedia. You make snake proud.

Brown recluse

These things are horribly nasty. Both my dad and another man in my home town were bitten on the leg by these things. In both cases a huge sore like the one in the lower right picture ensued, and took months to finally heal. Also in both cases, after it finally healed, a big hole was left in the leg, which lasted until the men died. The bites/sores were very painful, and both men reported that no pain medicine had any effect at all. Also in both cases, the men experienced no pain, no sensation at all at the time of the bite.

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man. (Mark Twain).

I got bit by a Recluse about 40 years ago.
I have a scar about the size of a half dollar.
I never knew I was bit until the skin started to rot away several
days later.

For what its worth i don't like em either.. with the exception of the old daddy long leg type that you know can't hurt ya.. weve got pretty good size (nickel maybe) pure black ones.. that i dont even want to turn over.. figure if i don't know they have a red spot it wont hurt me, and if i do know i'll be more scared.. But would still rather have spiders than scorpians..

We have camel spiders, but I think most people aound here call them sun spiders. They're not actually spiders, nor are they venemous, but they're evil-looking, fast, and creepy. then we have the whip scorpions, also called vinegaroons because of the vinegar-like acid they emit for defense. Also, harmless, but I still haven't been able to bring myself to handle one. Then of course the tarantulas, giant wolf spiders, scorpions, and ten quadzillion million and two different species of web spinning spiders. We also have the southwestern barking spider. That's what I blame every time I fart. " Brrrp. Oh, you hear that? Yeah, that was a southwestern barking spider running across the floor making it's signature mating call". But you know what we have very little of here? Chiggers, mosquitos, and gnats. And I love it.

I spray my house & yard once a year and very seldom if ever see a spider. If one should happen to get indoors one of my 2 cats, take care of it.
I spray my yard with a combo of 2D2 & 2D4. LOL
Miss having you around, DP...

Is unless you're rooting around in dark spaces without checking, you're pretty well safe. I don't know about the east side, but in MO, TN, KS, KY, and IL, you could be walking along in the woods, minding your own business, and walk smack dab into a web with one of those nasty orange and black hairy fuckin things. In the midwest, the spiders spin webs trying to catch people, I swear. I like it here just fine.

Was the worse place I have ever been for spiders, snakes and all else LETHAL! Cone Spiders are the absolute worst.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~ednieuw/australian/Spidaus.html

Area of distribution: The Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is a ground dweller, commonly found in moist soil areas along much of the eastern coastal area of New South Wales and Victoria.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Venom toxicity: - The Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is one of the world's most deadly spiders. Both the male and female carry atraxotoxin, one of the world's most dangerous toxins.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DANGER TIME: The mature male Sydney funnel-web spider will leave it's burrow and wander off during hot humid nights, looking for a mate. At this time it is known to enter homes, lodge in footwear, clothing and swimming pools, where they can survive several days under water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Highly aggressive: The male Sydney funnel web spider is highly aggressive when disturbed or cornered and is able to inflict multiple bites, with its "flick-knife" hardened fangs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heavy rain or earthworks will drive the Sydney funnel-web spider out of it's burrow and are commonly found wandering around the garden or in the home at such times.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An anti-venom is available in most major hospitals and ambulance vehicles in "funnel-web country". If bitten, you should apply first aid and medical attention (ambulance) should be sought as soon as possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spider identification: -The male Sydney funnel-web spider is about 25 mm and the female about 30 mm in body length. They are shiny black in colour with a dark purplish brown abdomen with a covering of reddish hairs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique identification markings include it's long spinnerets, that is, the two appendages on the end of the abdomen. Also the male Sydney funnel-web spider has a distinctive spur on both it's second front legs - refer to illustration on left.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Blue Mountains funnel-web spider is highly venomous and is found in the Blue Mountains area, as far west as the Bathurst - Orange region and occasionally in the Sydney basin.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Northern tree funnel-web spider is highly venomous and is found in south-eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales as far south as the Hunter Valley region.

I've seen dozens of brown recluse spider bites come throught the wound center. By the time they get to me, you usually have to do extensive debridements like those in the bottom pics. It's amazing how fast these go from a little red dimple to black necrotic tissue. One guy lost his leg because of it. A brown recluse scares me alot more than a black widow.

1. TBH makes fun of me for religiously upending my boots and shaking out my clothes (a few months in Israel will do that....some of those desert bugs are the size of kaiser rolls). She's been stung 3 times by scorpions since we've been married....2x she got stung pulling on a pair of jeans and the litle bastards got her in the tush. I can't reallt blame them for that.

2. I've been bitten 2x by brown recluses.....1x pulling on a pair of pants I'd left on the floor after a wild night about 15yrs ago. I was already on ABX for a sinus thing, so it didn't do much except leave this weird callous-thing on my right buttcheek for a week. 2nd time, bastid got me in the side of my head when I was sleeping. Felt it both times; now I have a great bald patch the size of a quarter on my noggin....hair won't grow at the bite site. Neither was a huge deal....the grotesque photos you see are generally of people who were too foolish or lazy to seek prompt medical attention, or never recognized the bite for what it was.

3. Black widow (there are other similarly dangerous species here in the US) bites can also cause systemic reactions such as partial paralysis, nausea, vomiting, cramps, etc. Nasty fuggers.
