Are you in there?
I'm the good looking one...bottom row center
Looks like Ben Cook
was he in Nam in early '68
do you know what unit?
I went in the army in 65 and lost track of Ben.
A few years later I found him through a 2nd party
and he had been in the Corps. Now I've lost him
again. He started driving big rigs and was gone
7 out of 8 weeks.
He's hiding. P.T.S.D.
Lived in his truck. He quit a few years ago
because of bad back and in somewhere around
that's in the DFW area...north of Ft Worth
not north. Nice place. I have a cousin there
You're probably right.
did he go by the name Skizzo?
Pick up all kinds of names in the service.
By the way I'm from Oak Cliff.
now 40 miles east of Waco
My name is Bill and I live in Addison
there are a lot of Ben Cooks on the web
Who knows, shit changes.
Ben Eugene Cook
His name was Gary Cates. He was killed within a week of the photograph.
Too many boys bit the big one there
Bull thank you for your service I'm hoping to join soon
It's a lot different now. But I wish you the best of luck and keep a low profile.
my pecker plowed a garden row in the dirt.
when we went under live fire at Ft Polk at
night I knew what he meant
Dad was in Europe and South Pacific WW11.
I remember the live fire at Polk...only we called it Ft. Puke
You know I've had people tell me there aren't any swamps at Polk.
I said I guess you've never been there then.
yes and it was hot there
and welcome too!
What area of Operation was the picture from?
My father and three Uncles all served from 67 - 72 between them all. I bet you have "the box" like they do, every now and then it gets the dust blown off and it comes out. We would sit and he would talk, learned allot at those times...
One of my Uncles MOS was Truck Driver, he ended up Driving a Pig on a Gun Truck...
Odd how your MOS can end up with so diverse interpretations..
Is a Priest. May be a medic.
To all others who ever grabs you off the boat owns you.
that may be true now but I received my assignment when I left the states
At the time of that photo we were in I Corps. The first corp near the DMZ just outside of Hue city. the Marines get most of the credit for liberating Hue but it was the Cav that the North Vietnamese Army feared the most. When we penetrated the city walls they ran like rats.
Yes sir, I have that little box which for me is an old brief case.
Hue was hell on earth for all of you there...
You know it was weird, my father and uncles along with some many others including yourself went to the Republic Of back then with all it was then and all they told us about it.
My mother went a few years back and took some tours through the different regions. She said that most of the older tour guides would speak with respect of the US military men and women.
But with what she told me about and the pictures she showed, nothing has really changed for most of the people there, Except for the War, it is much still the same structure though the tourest trade does add allot for the common family income in many ways...
That would be a sit down conversation
He was from Calais Maine out on the River road. He kinda looks like the gentleman on the far left back row, actually. Crazy as a Coon and loved nothing more than Hunting except maybe fishing, well excluding women of course. LOL
Mike Cockren was the other Uncle up that ways 67 - 69, he was Force Recon though.
Dad was on a PBR for short trips mostly down in the delta.
that matters in the Marines is 0311 rifleman, everything else is support.
the 11B40 was light weapons infantry, the 40 signified Sgt E-5. I made that grade with 15t months in service. It was a battlefield impact promotion
even Cookie is a rifleman first and foremost..
there were a lot of guys over there and I do not recall most of them. I have PTSD pretty bad
I spent two years going out to the VA for counseling for it before just not getting up one day and going out.
So, what you do now?
I'm retired now. Are you in Dallas?
Na, Saint Petersburg Florida, mouth of Tampa Bay. We've a Large VA facility down here with some older sections dating back to WWI. Though I think there is a push to quit remodeling them now.
I was going out there non Service connected counseling. Seems that PTSD isn't exclusive to War but I guess some household environments can be conducive to it's development.Or so it was explained to me, Judge wanted an evaluation done and I chose to go to the VA to have it done. Down here in Florida there is a group of Judges which got together and opened up a connection with some counseling services and evaluation services which contract to the State for Court Order Evaluations and Counseling. Neat huh?
I never liked to fight, but refused to let anyone put their hands on me for any reason. I also picked up this habit of blacking out and finding out I had hurt someone a bit more than what others considered justified... mmm
No more black outs, or drinking, or fights...
Finally came to terms with it is all mind over matter. I don't mind it don't really matter... lol
Also picked up this bad habit of never sleeping...
sounds like it to me
