D.C.-area sniper set to be executed tonight -Virginia governor rejects clemency for mastermind of 2002 attacks

RICHMOND, Va. - Gov. Tim Kaine denied clemency Tuesday for sniper John Allen Muhammad, clearing the way for him to be executed for the attacks that terrorized the nation's capital region for three weeks in 2002.

Muhammad is set to die by injection Tuesday night at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt. His attorneys had asked Kaine to commute his sentence to life in prison because they say he is mentally ill. The U.S. Supreme Court turned down his final appeal.

"I find no compelling reason to set aside the sentence that was recommended by the jury and then imposed and affirmed by the courts," Kaine, who is known for carefully considering death penalty cases, said in a statement. "Accordingly, I decline to intervene."

Muhammad was sentenced to death for killing Dean Harold Meyers at a Manassas gas station during a three-week spree that left 10 dead across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

He and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, also were suspected of fatal shootings in other states, including Louisiana, Alabama and Arizona.

Muhammad was offered a choice for his last meal, which he accepted and requested that details not be released to the public, NBC News reported.

Murky motives
The motive for the shootings remains murky. Malvo said Muhammad wanted to use the plot to extort $10 million from the government to set up a camp in Canada where homeless children would be trained as terrorists. But Muhammad's ex-wife has said she believes the attacks were a smoke screen for his plan to kill her and regain custody of their three children.

he just murdering thug and justice is to be done. it that simple. ryo not want to make him seem like anything else. he not sniper. he not kook. he not hero or victim or anything else. he just murdering thug who is on his way to a quick and easy and kinda clinical death. does it matter how he die? the point is just to make him dead neh. lethal injection makes the people behind the justice humane. that's all. he will still be dead. simple as that.

Sniper?

No! A sniper saves lives! He was just another wek spined muslim coward that used a rifle to do evil business.
They gave him the juice at 1906 and was pronounced dead at 1911 last night. No he will have eternity to pay for his cowardly and evil deeds.
I have no good words to say about him or his kind.
I wish he would have been put to death by the gas chamber, electric chair, fireing squad or hell I have some old ropes they could have used.
He got off way to easy!

I agree, except for the gas chamber. The gas they used is not painful enough. Hanging or the chair would have been better. And not hanging that breaks necks & kills quickly - just tie a loop around his neck & let him strangle painfully. Inhumane? I don't care. What he & Malvo did was inhumane. An eye for an eye.

We had not used the chamber (or put an inmate to death) for over twenty years back in the mid 90's. It hadn't been used for so long that there wasn't a current employee that had any first hand experiance. So when we realized that it was going to be used it was a scramble to find those with experiance, we had to bring people out of retirement to check the chamber, and set up procedures etc. All the time it was a media circus, and we had an area set aside for protesters that was to near our staff housing (that i was in) So you can imagine the hostility. Troops would get half lit after shift, and throw beer cans at the protestors.. It was quite a sceen.
We tested it on a pig, and then the EPA got involved as of course we released the cyonide into the air to clear the chamber.. WOW! They used that as an excuse to try another stay, but didn't get it. So the execution goes off. And let me tell ya, it's not a pretty sight. I'm obviously pro death penalty. But even the staff were throwing up. He took 15 min to die. and all the time was thrashing about.. News reporters made national headlines with the story.. Everybody was pretty sickened. Till then the Inmates had a choice of gas or injection. The following week, all but 2 on death row changed to the neeedle.

Very interesting. The execution scene you describe is exactly what I would want to happen. Perhaps I should rethink my position on the gas chamber.
