"On more than one occasion representatives from the 1st Cav. would come to our unit and try to recruit guys to become door gunners. The extolled the virtues of flying, the extra pay and the excitement of combat. Some fell for it and were never heard from again. Before I went into the Army my dad told me never to volunteer for anything. The fellow in the photo above is handling a M60 machine gun. Unfortunately this also made him a prime target for the enemy and the attrition rate showed it. BTW, when back in the states they used to come to our unit asking us to volunteer for medical experiments. Didn't volunteer for that one either and I am here today to tell the story."
