The "Galatz" Sniper Rifle was developed by Israeli Military Industries (IMI). It is a sniper modification of the "Galil" Assault Rifle which is widely used in Israeli Armed Forces. Rifle was built in two variants chambered for 7.62 x 51 mm (.308 Win) and 5.45 x 45 mm (.223 Rem) cartridges.
Rifle's automatic works on gas returning principle threw the gas channel. It's internal automatic scheme, barrel's channel locking principle, lock's frame and hammer mechanism is a copy of the AK Assault Rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. "Galatz" execute only single fire. Safety lock when active closes cartridge case extraction opening preventing dust from getting in. When it is active it blocks lock's frame and the trigger. However there is ability to make sure if the carSniper variant of the "Gallil" Assault Rifletridge is inside the barrel's channel.
The "Galatz" is fitted with 20-round box magazine. It's design was borrowed from the US Stoner-63 Light Machine Gun. Barrel box lid is similar to Finnish M62 Assault Rifle's.
The "Galatz" Sniper Rifle is completed with standard hardpoint for the optical or night vision sights. It is fitted with 3x magnification sight as standard. However rifle has opened dioptrical sight from Finnish M62 Assault Rifle. This sight is used for sighting in short ranges till 100 m when the main sight is ineffective. Dioptrical sight has two range positons - from 0 to 300 and from 300 to 500 m range. For usage at night it can be fitted with three shining spots. One more feature is that the sniper has ability to use both sights at the same time, as the optical one is displaced left from the sighting line.
Rifle has a folding right wooden buttstock. It's connection mechanisms are similar to Belgium FN FAL Automatic Rifle's "paratrooper" variant. It has adjustable length and cheekpad. Pistol handle is made from plastic and covered with rubber to ensure better grip with a hand. Rifles foregrip is made from wood with built-in folding special "Harris bipod". Last mention can be used for cutting barbed wires.
Heavy barrel is extended comparing with the "Galil" Assault Rifle's one. It's flash-hider can be changed with a sound supressor.
Extreme reliability compared with the AK Assault Rifle. Ability to use the main and additional sights at once. Interchangeable magazines with US ones. Interchangeable parts with the "Galil" automatic rifle. Adjustable buttstock. The "Galatz" joins the best qualities from the separate assault and automatic rifles.
A bit low power for a sniper rifle. The "Galatz" is more likely is a tactical support weapon than a real sniper rifle.
and you are most very correct. this is more of a designate marksman's rifle than a real sniper rifle. even so, it is a really effective weapon and the Israelis have make very much good use of it. you have a typo in the cartridge size. you called it a 5.45mm x 45mm when it really is a 5.56mm x 45mm NATO standard. one of the thing ryo like much about this rifle is the straight box magazine. ryo have found that self prefer these over the banana style magazine. also you know that the Galil itself is manufacture in a version that is a true sniper rifle, and the lastest marks of these have become very powerful with the use of chambering for more high power cartridges such as the 8.6mm x 70mm Lapua Magnum and the win .300 ultra magnum and they are already experimenting with other cartridges too. IMI is no longer the name of the company. today this same company is now call, IWI. the reason given for the name change was a politic reason. the Galatz is still manufacture and they constantly tinkering with it to make improvements here and there which improve its usefulness, which in turn say much about the quality of this weapon since the Israeli small arms industry is not willing to give it up. it very effective in the desert too.
you have done a very fine write up of this rifle and should be commended for such good work.
