The Glock-VBR 7.92 is the companion weapon of the VBR PDW Sidearm 7.92x24mm S. Both weapons are designs out a Belgium CRISAT program form VBR-Belgium. The Glock-VBR 7.92 is a standard Glock 17 which is modified to the 7.92x24mm Short caliber by Rik Van Bruaene.
Before a government takes a new Personal Defense Weapon system (PDW-system) in consideration to replace the 9x19 mm caliber, the new PDW-system must contain a PDW, a pistol and the new ammunition. The prototype of the VBR PDW Sidearm Cal.7.92x24mm Short and the 7.92x24mm short ammunition are not enough to come in consideration by governments. The 7.92x24mm Short cartridges needs also a pistol before it can be taking serious as a new PDW ammunition. The 7.92x24mm Short cartridge is designed to play a function in a multicaliber roll with the existing 9x19mm frame platforms. Basically, almost every 9x19mm pistol can be adapted for the 7.92x24mm Short cartridge, but some pistols are easier to modify then others.
The selection of a 9 mm frame platform, which is suitable for an easy modification to the 7.92x24mm caliber depends of the magazine. The 7.92x24mm caliber is thinner then the 9x19mm cartridge and not all 9x19 mm magazines can hold the 7.92x24mm S cartridges without modifications on the magazine.
The lips of the Glock 9mm magazine are longer then these of the most other magazines. These long lips can hold the thinner 7.92x24mm S cartridge tight in the magazine. The standard Glock 17 magazine feeds the 7.92x24mm S cartridges without problems in the modified Glock. The standard Glock 17 magazine are wide available on the market and can be used without modification.

One of the advantages of the multicaliber roll of the 7.92x24mm caliber is that it can be used in the existing standard 9x19mm frame platforms. To prevent the high cost for the development of a new 7.92x24mm pistol, VBR-Belgium prefers to modify on of the most popular pistols on the market. Besides the dual use of the standard existing Glock magazines, the Glock 17 is supported by a lot of accessories for military and police use. This gives the Glock a very important advantage compared to other pistols. As companion pistol of the VBR PDW Sidearm the Glock-VBR 7.92 has to compete with the FiveSeven and Heckler & Koch UCP (HK P46) pistol.
The Glock-VBR 7.92, the FiveSeven and the HK P46 belong to a new generation of pistols designed as a companion weapon for PDWs.
