Hackers steal, release electronic data from top climate research center

WASHINGTON - Hackers broke into the electronic files of one of the world's foremost climate research centers this week and posted an array of e-mails in which prominent scientists engaged in a blunt discussion of global warming research and disparaged climate-change skeptics.

The skeptics have seized upon e-mails stolen from the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in Britain as evidence that scientific data have been rigged to make it appear as if humans are causing global warming. The researchers, however, say the e-mails have been taken out of context and merely reflect an honest exchange of ideas.

University officials confirmed the data breach, which involves more than 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents, but said they could not say how many of the stolen items were authentic.

"We are aware that information from a server in one area of the university has been made available on public websites," the statement says. "We are extremely concerned that personal information about individuals may have been compromised. Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm what proportion of this material is genuine."

Michael E. Mann, who directs the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said in a telephone interview from Paris that skeptics are "taking these words totally out of context to make something trivial appear nefarious."

In one e-mail from 1999, the center's director, Phil Jones, alludes to one of Mann's articles in the journal Nature and writes, "I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."

Mann said the "trick" Jones referred to was placing a chart of proxy temperature records, which ended in 1980, next to a line showing the temperature record collected by instruments from that time onward. "It's hardly anything you would call a trick," Mann said, adding that both charts were differentiated and clearly marked.

But Myron Ebell, director of energy and global warming policy for the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said this and other exchanges show researchers have colluded to establish the scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change.

"It is clear that some of the 'world's leading climate scientists,' as they are always described, are more dedicated to promoting the alarmist political agenda than in scientific research," said Ebell, whose group is funded in part by energy companies. "Some of the e-mails that I have read are blatant displays of personal pettiness, unethical conniving, and twisting the science to support their political position."

In one e-mail, Ben Santer, a scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, offered to beat up skeptic Pat Michaels, a senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute, out of sympathy for Jones.

Neither Jones nor Santer could be reached for comment.

This issue really gets to me, as i was taken in at first, and only after a revue of the facts found that Gore (and all the greenies) did not take into consideration that this short term increase in temp has occured over and over in our past, they only used (and hid the other) data from recent periods of time. Makes me mad when they attack the oil co's as the bad guys, fact is that there is just as much "big bucks" on the other side of this issue (ge etc) as the oil co's. This is driven by bucks and politics, not science. Also for what it's worth (not much) tickels me to think of mr scientist offering to "beat up" someone. I'm guessing i was like a lot of you in this, in my wild (ok dumb) youth, i honestly believed that a night out with out a fight was a wasted night (lost as many as i won, but boy i liked to hook) anyway, i would bet money that: 1) mr scientist has never had a fight in his life. and 2) that any of us on this site could "give him a look" and make him pee his pants.

a man has to hold his word, hold his beliefs, and hold a good sight picture.

anyone who have take astronomy in high school or college can tell you that this whole global warming thing is lot of junk neh. the sun go through 11, 22 and 60 sai cycles of solar prominence and sun spot activity. as the rates of the solar prominences increase with the 60 sai cycles and the rates of sun spot activity increase with the 11, and 22 sai cycles then it naturally cause warming on all the terestrial planets of mercury, venus, earth and mars. we are coming into the high point of one of the 22 sai cycles of sun spot activity right now and in the next couple sai this will decrease and the mean temperature of the earth will go back to normal. also while these greenie scientist are fond of telling you, it is true that the ozone in both the north and south poles is decreasing, demo what they conveniently forget to tell you is that the ozone layers over the amazon basin, the philippines archepelago and the tibetan plateau have been proportionally increasing and there is ever stronger evidence coming out that this is nother natural phenomenon that also go in cycles and have nothing to do with human pollution in the atmosphere. is there pollution ka well of course there is as anyone who ever live in large city in the summer time can tell you. is this bad for you and the atmosphere ka well of course it is neh. is this something to gloom and doom about the end of the world over ka no it not. lot of silly science in the world today, demo there is lot of good science out there too and people need to learn to look at the facts and think for themselves neh. wonder how much of the non gloom and doom facts were in those emails as oppose to the gloom and doom facts neh? it would be interesting also to see how much of that was make up by the hackers and how much was actual hack out of that server neh

Really, like this one:

Cheers
Phil
PS I'm getting hassled by a couple of people to release the CRU station temperature data.
Don't any of you three tell anybody that the UK has a Freedom of Information Act !

And this one:

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or
first thing tomorrow.
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps
to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from
1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual
land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land
N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999
for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with
data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.
Cheers
Phil
