Would someone explain the concept of "counter sniper", please?

It's a person or a mission requiring someone to specifically engage other snipers. It does sound a bit dumb to me, as a police counter sniper is going to engage any threat to whatever is supposed to be guarded, so they are technically just snipers or marksmen.

specific phrase than sniper or anti sniper. A sniper has a list of targets in order of priority, usually with enemy snipers being at the top of the list. Then you have the more passive anti sniper, which would be something more along the mines of physical barriers and presence patrols to prevent a sniper from engaging something. Okay, so in my fuzzy mind, here's what we have so far

Sniper = More general purpose, can shoot lots of stuff

Anti-Sniper = Preventative measure designed to keep a sniper from engaging a target

Counter-Sniper = Used to loacate and kill an enemy sniper after the enemy sniper has been identified.

Does this seem right?

While I don't see this rifle being worth the price tag, it sure would be nice to have one.

I think the rifle takes a term when it's used for a purpose. For instance, a Remington 700 with R5 barrel and Leupold MK3 rifle scope mounted into a McMillan Kevlar/Fiberglass stock is pretty well going to be called a sniper rifle, even though I would build one to hunt deer if I had cash to waste. And the flip side is that a Savage .30-06 from Wal-Mart isn't going to be seen as a sniper rifle, but I could certainly take someone out from a decent distance with one. I think it's the application that earns a rifle its name. I know the HK PSG-1 has been around quite a bit longer than the term counter sniper has.

It looks kinda like it could be a modified 91...on second look it looks ALOT like a 91.

Just to add something else, I think you're right about designating a rifle by its intended use. A "varmint rifle", for example. By the way, if a rifle is accurate & flat shooting enough to be good for prairie dogs, wouldn't it be fine for a sniper to use to head shoot an enemy, even though "sniper rifles" are generally of larger caliber?
We've all heard the term "deer rifle" all our lives. That's always kind of irritated me, since practically any centerfire rifle you have can be used to hunt deer (and probably has been). I've been in one deer camp where there were 2 .30-06's, a 7 mm Rem Mag, 2 .30-30's, a .375 Winchester, a 7.62x39 and a .357 Mag Blackhawk. In northeastern OK, in thick woods!

My family members have taken more whitetail with a .22 LR than any other single cartridge. They're quieter and the game wardens are less likely to find you. What? Southern Missouri.

Those balistics are close to ecaman's dear camp 30-06's. Plus if he ever goes after Elk it would be perfect. Regardles of what ever cartridge is "supposed" to be best for Deer, i'm guessing that over the years more Deer have been taken with the 30-30 than any other, and more Elk with 30-06 than any other..

Just about every season, there's a new "Must have Ultra Short Belted Rimmed Super Magnum" round that just has to be used for deer. Deer haven't gotten any tougher, shot placement counts more than long or short action. I think hunters, fishermen, sportsmen in general suffer more than most other enthusiasts from the desire to "Keep up with the Joneses". That Winchester 94 starts to look awfully old and obsolete when a buddy comes to deer camp to check the zero on his 2k dollar deer killing machine with the laser rangefinding scope, even though most shots will be taken in the underbrush, huh?

I agree that the 30-30 and the 30.06 are two of the most popular cartirdges for those two game animals, but I think it mainly because the availbilty of the ammo. Heck back in the day gas stations carried 30-30 and 30.06 ammo because evryone had one of those rifles.

You can't "buy" sucess in hunting Deer anymore than you can buy common sense..

You can always pay someone for a guided hunt where they can guarantee a kill. Hell, you wound it, go back to the lodge, guides track it, come back, their guns smelling like fresh cordite.

Yep, im with you, glad were past all that.. Not surprising really when you figure our nature.
