my dad, Ironkoji here at the forum, wrote a pretty good article about why the program should have been canceled and that it was a good think it was canceled. they were really pretty crappy, over engineered, way too heavy rifles.
yeah, too heavy, and out performed. that thing need to stay on the starship enterprise
even they wouldn't want a crappy rifle like the XM 8. the FN SCAR is a little better, but I'm not too sure about the future of that one either. after 60 years almost, you'd think we could come up with something better than just the SCAR to replace the aging M16s and M4s don't you?
I actually like the SCAR's or the bushmaster ACR (formerly magpul masada) for standard infantry issue. I like the versatility of these rifles to be customized for a specific mission. They can be used by the door thumper or the SDM (designated marksman).
As for the XM8... melt it and re-use the plastic
what i said was i wasn't too sure about the future of it. there's politics involved too you know. FN Herstal makes some of the best small arms in the world imho. my dad owns several FN Herstal rifles and they are good rifles. i also like modularity and "system" type rifles, although i've seen some of those system go way overboard on that business. the SCAR is pretty straight forward as a system rifle. there are, as i'm sure you know, two basic rifles in the system, a 5.56mm and a 7.62mm and they each now come with 3 barrels for long rifle, carbine and mini carbine, but to tell you the truth i really like the H&K 416 and 417 system a lot better. how would you stack them up together between the H&Ks and the SCARs?
I like the 416 a lot. I think its a nice improvement to the M16 platform. I would rather be carring a 416 than a colt M4. I know it comes in different barrel lengths (4 I think)... but aren't they completely different rifles? If so, the reason I liked the scar and ACR is because they can be swithed in the matter of seconds. You can even change uppers and lowers to turn a 5.56 into a 7.62 if you needed. I know its possible to change barrels and uppers/lowers on current M16 and 416 weapons, but the scar and ACR make it as simple as possible. The 416 looks like its very reliable, and from what I've read, it stay much cleaner than most M16 rifles. Anyway, I give H&K a "C" on the XM8 and an "A" on the 416
they need to practice for the tournament that start this saturday. ryo had to stay home and prepare for meeting of design team tonight. we will be working late so if would like, can show up late. btw, ryo pops own a H&K 416 and he like it very very much!
PS will tell little brother to look at your post when he get home from range later.
