Homeowner Kills Robbery Suspect In Altamonte Springs

Friday, June 19, 2009 3:49:39 PM

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS -- A masked suspect was shot and killed outside an Altamonte Springs home.

Deputies arrived on the scene just before 4 a.m. Friday on the 300 block of Magnolia Street just off of Ronald Regan Boulevard.

A woman woke up when she heard someone trying to kick in the door of her home. Seminole County Sheriff's deputies say that's when her husband went to the door and shot twice at Donald Salaam. Salaam, 21, was hit once in the chest.

The wife was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when the shots were fired.

Investigators say it appears the homeowner was justified.

“Our homeowner didn't have an obligation to retreat. He is able to protect his property," said Lt. James Clark, of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. "The questions we’re trying to answer: If he was in fear for his life and the life of his wife. If he was, he would be justified in this shooting.”

Detectives are trying to determine if Salaam acted alone.

Seminole County deputies say Salaam has an extensive criminal history involving drugs, fleeing/eluding law enforcement. He was also investigated for a previous armed robbery.

If the police want to look for charges the home owner needs to sue them for not posting a officer at their door to guard their home from this piece of dung. How stupid is this police department?

No police force is here to protect you or your property, thats your job. The owner did his job but the Seminole County Sheriff's Office and I quote "The questions we’re trying to answer: If he was in fear for his life and the life of his wife. If he was, he would be justified in this shooting.”

............er...............Do I need to explain further??

Different in Kalifornia, they actually will prosecute YOU if the perp isn't in your house and actually threatening your life. It's actually a running joke with all my buddies about dragging them in and make sure, really sure you kill 'em (the perp of course)

Same in NH, The cops tell us to make sure they are inside, drag them in if you have to.
Then call us and we will clean up the mess.

Any CCW class will teach you that the first and pretty much only thing you say at a shooting sceen is "i was in fear of my life"... Course thats if your the one who won.

Don't drag the body inside, as stated show that you had fear for your life and ask for an attorney.

I think the police were doing a CYA in their statement not so much as going after the home owner. If nothing else it was a good "advertisement" as to what to say should anyone else end up in that position.

I would give a very brief statement as to what happened so the police wouldn't be too suspicious when they show up, give them a little something to work with if you live in a castle doctrine state. "the man was breaking into my home and said he was going to kill me, I was in fear for my life as well as my families and protected myself". It doesn't so much incriminate you as it does let the police know the other guy was up to no good. With that tell them you would like an attorney before you give any further statements as to protect your own interest. Most police will under stand, if they don't then you really don't need to say anything else.
