in that speech. Many of the older guys may already know. When JFK said "Ich bin ein Berliner", he was actually calling himself a pastry called the Berliner. The correct way for him to identify himself with the crowd would have been for him to say "Ich bin Berliner". The crowd went nuts when he said it, they knew what he meant to say and they thought it was great that the POTUS tried their language even if he did screw it up. It's like that in just about every foreign country. if you're an American and make the attempt to speak the host nation language, you earn respect from many of the locals.

yeah, and trying to speak english with their accent doesn't work too well either. Apparently all the other nationalities in the world hear themselves differently than we loud Americans do.
