CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) — Investigators in Pinal County believe two men shot and killed in a remote desert area were ambushed by fellow smugglers.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Tamatha Villar (VEE'-ar) says the men had been at a migrant camp in the desert south of Interstate 8 near Antelope Peak.

She says someone opened fire on them with an AK-47-type weapon on Sunday night, shooting each man once. One died immediately, but the other managed to get off six shots with an AR-15-type rifle.

The wounded man then used a cell phone to call for help. Villar says he talked to 911 dispatchers for nearly half an hour before he apparently died. He told them he was near the spot where a deputy was shot and wounded on April 30.

Both men are believed to be from Mexico.
