Rare to see this many flying, today!
one 20 mm cannon, and four 50's .. yep you didn't want one of these on your tail if you were Japanese, or German..
Can't remember the names but these were flown by the two top aces of WWII.. I was surprised when i read it, as i figured it would have been the P51 that had that distinction.. One of you wiki boy check that if you feel like it, but i remember reading this not long ago.. Also that the engines rotated in diffrent directions. I thought that was cool, but wondered how much harder it was as far as logistics.. "spare Allison engines, sure we have them... in left hand, and you need a right huh"..
greg, I was surprised as well, the P38 was one of the baddest planes in the sky!!
Bong and Mc guire achieved so many kills (40 and 38 respectively) is that nothing that the Japs or Germans had even came close to the P-38's top speed of over 400 mph, they simply couldn't get away.
Middlesboro Ky has a P-38 on display. It was dug up from under 200 ft of ice in Greenland.
It was restored and flies great. It is called the "Glacier Gal". I have been there to see it...awesome.
Glacier Girl , not Gal
But I got stuck on the 268' of ice part. 50 years and 268' of ice developed above this plane?
Shit! I'm damn proud of global warming and my carbon footprint then.
have to say if those.50's and the cannon are still operational....FFL3 anyone? lol
Get some smoke in the air around here and do my part for the global warming deal... What ya doing off work lop... you have some SS money to put in the kitty dude..
On behalf of retired Americans everywhere i want to thank all you worker drones for keeping us in cold beer, and hot water... Bless your hearts.. Vote DEMOCRATIC.. We need more people on the dole..
Hamp ..thanks for looking that up...yep i remember that name "Bong" as it was unusual.. something like Dick or Richard right.. Wondered if he was Asian or what..Bet he got kidded a lot in the sixties.. On second thought im thinking...anyone who has put 40 planes in flames doesn't get kidded to often.. The ME262 (the jet) was faster, but H didn't let them use it for air superiority.. guess they wanted to, but he insisted it be used as an attack plane instead..
Richard Bong and Thomas Mc Guire.
Bong was a Blond hair , regular guy. Hw was killed shortly affter the war in a plane crash, he was a test pilot.
but undependable and near zero payload capabilities and I doubt they handled worth a shit.
