too bad you did not get to try Four fifties, on a turret mount. That was the standard defense against strafing aircraft attacking a heavy AAA battery of 90mm or 120mm guns. Everyone in the outfit had to demonstrate competency with the mount against moving targets. I never had more shooting fun than that.

I was on the USS White Plains for a short while. Once we went out for a little fun and shoot the AA guns. Everyone had to stay inside so I worked my way to an area as close as possible to the gun they were going to shoot. I believe it was a 20mm and they were going to qualify the Gunner on board. Like I said I was on a ship, and the gun was on a rig that was welded to the deck. It shook so hard I thought my damn wisdom teeth were gonna come out. I did get a look at the target and some tracers. It was crazy!!
