The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 people suspected of being in the country illegally, all within an eight-hour period on Tuesday.
The arrests began with traffic stops in the north Valley at 11:30 a.m., Lieutenant Brian Lee said Wednesday. The last traffic stop was about 7 p.m. the same night.
The initial traffic stops led deputies to a drophouse in west Phoenix, Lee said. The house was located in the same area targeted by Sheriff Joe Arpaio in his crime suppression sweep two weeks ago. Deputies also believe a stolen vehicle found at the residence was used to smuggle illegal immigrants.
Arpaio said any illegal immigrants brought into Arizona by human smugglers will continue to be arrested as co-conspirators
