is read to your kid every day (as in EVERY day) as soon as they can sit up. Teach them the alphabet, then sound out the words. That's phonics and it works. You do this and I absolutely guarantee you they will be reading before they enter Kindergarten. It's the best jump-start you can give a child in life other than good nutrition.
