No, overkill at all!

If that is a red dot scope it will be faster to get on target than iron sights. I love red dot scopes are easy and quick to get on target with.

yes, on a night stand

with the red dot scope it will be easier to use in low light or no light in a house. 22 cal is good to 200 yards, but it drops a lot at that distances.
