they were first developed in the early 30s and the Japanese never really changed or upgraded them over time. By 1945 they were still shooting these same rifles in the field, which were woefully underpowered compared tot he M1 Garand, the BAR and the M1 Carbine. why they never developed their small arms as time went by may seem to be a mystery to westerners, but you have to put yourself into their mindset to understand this anomally. to the then japanese imperial army, it wasn't the weapon that was important. it was the warrior. in their mindset a well trained warrior would be just as effective with inferior equipment as they would be with state of the art equipment. that idea didn't seem to work out too well for them which is why ryo is really worried about the state of out of date and underpowered small arms in our military today.

I've never handled one and I read
that they were (very loosely) a
copy of Mauser designs. I have
done a web search and not found
specific information about it's
use as a sniper weapon.
