at the same time, there's going to be trouble. In that pic you're looking at 300,000 tons of American diplomacy.

Yep, I was just thinking.
That's either a beautiful sight or a nightmare.

bad tactics...

This appears not to be photoshopped...and its stupid tactics.. This is the sorta stuff that kept the money in battleships while we should have been building aircraft carriers..

NEVER but your resources together like that.. There's virtually no reason for it.. and any Nation that for any reason felt it was necessary to defeat us would be able to take out three of our prime resources with one small tactical nuke..

I know this reads like the tin foil hat club.. But for real guys.. The potential for loss far outweighs the photo op..

I'm not sure it is real myself. The giveaway is the placing of the support ships. In a real Carrier Strike Group there are about eight to ten ships total, including a fast attack sub. There are a bunch of Arleigh-Burke class destroyers, usually one cruiser, and a fast supply ship (full of soda pop). The support ships surround the carrier port, starboard, fore and aft as the sub cruises below. The combination forms a support 'bubble' around the carrier. The ships are all networked using the Aegis combat system which tracks anything that comes near, air, sea, or underneath. The Aegis system is designed to track from "detect to kill."

Remember that Iranian airbus that we shot down a few years ago in the Gulf? Some idiot mis-labeled it as a fighter jet, so when it got too close, Aegis took it out. When the system is cooking you couldn't get an inner tube close to a carrier.

The entire package is designed to protect the carrier. The other thing here that is suspect is that we have eleven carriers, pretty evenly split between the west and east coasts. East Coast carriers are based in Norfolk. West Coast carriers are based in San Diego or Puget Sound. At any given time about a fourth of them are in the yard for refits which sometimes take a couple of years. The chances for three carriers to be available for a parade like this are slim.

The "three carriers means trouble" rule still applies, but in practice they would be spread out over probably hundreds of miles. Like this they would interfere with each other's traffic patterns. This came from a promotional power point and I just thought it looked cool.

and not a Carrier Strike Group on patrol. They screwed up by not being vigilant. Plus they really had no way to defend themselves. Nowadays every destroyer has close-in defense capabilities.

Schuyler..

Congratulations on an excellent primer on Naval operations.. I believe your on the money here and guessing if they did have all three available to use as some sort of photo op that thier would be a lot more ships shown than just the convergence of the three carrier strike forces,
and doubt would they cruise this close together..

Will ask Cali Mike to look at this if he gets on tonight.. Mike was on a CVA back in the 80's and did a westpac cruise with the 7th fleet.. At least Pacific used to be the territory of the 7th fleet, im not sure if that rotates are not..

Spent 4 years in the Navy.. 3 of them overseas, and was never on a ship.. Take that back i was on an old WWII carrier we had given to the Spanish in Rota Spain for about 15 min.. Just long enough to deliver some film..

I have to tell you guys a cool little war story... when we deployed to Spain on the trip over they asked for volunteers for attachment to complex ops.. This is typical when ever a squadron deploys.. A Naval Patrol Squadron is a "Company" size operation, and has the responsibility to assign at least 2 troops to complex..

I always found this fun, and as a petty officer (NCO) you had a better job of getting a soft job than staying with the squadron.. So my Chief agrees.. and i found myself in paradise.. I report to Complex.. Turns out they weren't expecting anyone, the Complex Chief starts to send me home, then says lets talk a bit, so we had coffee, he's sorta asking me questions, by then we had done our tour in SE Asia, and the Chief was making sure i could read write and count to ten.. So He tells me, look we have a rogue Lieutenant who is running complex recreation.. Could you give him a hand.. I go over to complex recreation (basically nothing but a place to play, sorta recess for sailors) Only the slow kids go there, as anyone that has a set spends liberty off base.. Anyway the place is being run by a young Lt, who is a trip and a half..

Long hair, a true and honest dope smoking hippy... How he had managed to not get kicked out is amazing.. Of course they had done the time honored tradition for losers.. stick him out of sight and he'll go away... On day one he says call me Tom or what ever it was.. Guys the Navy is NOT like the air force.. Officers and Enlisted DO NOT fraternize.. period... i could never call him Tom.. but did at least get his job done for him so he could go play.. His job was to do nothing.. Open a couple of locks and secure them later.. Deliver film (movies) to the diffrent areas. (the Spanish A/C thing) NOTHING.. Plus i had an old CJ2 at my disposal that let me have about the 3 most fun months of my life..

This is a lesson in how stupid greg is.. I'm in paradise.. im back at the barracks and one of those real A hole lifers.. The type that "might" make E-7 if they stay in for 30.. and only go by the book.. Which would be ok if they were smart enough to know it... (im going to have to spend extra time in prayer for this, but fact) anyway this joker says .. So Edwards how do you like complex ops.. smiling cause he thinks I've got a shitty job... I tell him (i still can't believe this) That its the best job on base, and I've got it in made in the shade..

oooohhhhhhhwwwwwaaaaattttttttaaaaarrrrrrreeeeettttttaaaaaaarrrrrrdddddiiiiiaaaaaammmmm

The very next day im called back to squadron and wind up working port and starboard (12 on 12 off) for the last 3 months in a concrete bunker manning or communications radio.. sheesh
